You can set up disk encryption for the internal disks, and also compression (they are independent settings).
If you make the backups to directly connected USB disks using the built-in backup jobs, the files on the backup disks are not encrypted and they are not compressed.
You could of course back up to another ReadyNAS that also uses disk encryption and compression, or back up to a PC or cloud service that uses encryption/compression.
