Exceptionally slow restriping of new drive

Last week, I added a new 4tb HUS724040ALE640 drive to my Pro 6 in the 5th drive slot.

To date I have been running (4) 3tb WD30EFRX.

The game plan was to add the new 4tb drive, add it to the RAID (running in RAID-X) and once everything was set slowly replace each drive to top things out.

Now a week and one day later the NAS is still working on restriping the drive.  I'm at 86.9%, but it seems to have slowed to about 1.2% progress every 24hrs.  And durring this prcess I bastically have no access to my data.  I can see the file structure, but I cant access/move files, and I can't loginto the admin interface.

1) is this normal?

2) am I stuck with just waiting it out?

I've got an unexpected project that I need to get at video footage that is archived on this NAS.

Other info that might be relivant:

  • the array shows a totaly of 8tb of storage and 5.4tb was utilised.
  • It's on the latest firmware (don't recal the number)

Thanks for any help that you can offer.

Re: Exceptionally slow restriping of new drive

The progress meter isn't a very good predictor of the total running time, but normally I'd have expected the resync to take about 24 hours.  And usually you can access the files, etc with somewhat reduced performance.

I am wondering if one of the disks is failing.  If you have ssh access, you could look at the SMART stats without using the frontview, otherwise you'll need to wait for the resync to complete.

Re: Exceptionally slow restriping of new drive

**sigh**

Well I tried to ssh and I get back a "refused connection" error.  I imagine that this means that I either didn't enable ssh (thought I had, but it's been ages) or something worse is going on.

Just to make certain: I'm using PuTTY, the NAS would be using port 22, and I'd be prompted for my login after opening the connection, correct?  It's been a while 🙂

Any other thoughts, or strategies?  Even though the progress meter isn't a good predictor, I'm only at 86.9% after just over a week and progress appears to be slowing.  Not feeling really hopefull...

Re: Exceptionally slow restriping of new drive

Well on a complete lark I tried the frontview login again and to get access, VERY slow access but it's there.

I do have one of my older drives failing according to the popup message at login.  It didn't identify what drive position it was, so I'm try to get to the logs for that info.

Any advice on best practice?

  1. wait out the current restripethen replace?
  2. locate the drive and replace right now? (seems like a bad idea)
  3. other options?

Thanks again!

Re: Exceptionally slow restriping of new drive

Okay, it's disk 1.  So I know who to swap out.

Any advice/wisdom/opinion on when?  Before or after the current restripe is done?

I think it's best to wait for the restripe to complete.
