Folder Access Issue

I have a couple of folders on my readynas share that I can't seem to access they have a little white dash in a red circle on them, when i do getinfo on them it says I have read and write permission, when I connect via afp the little white dash is there and the folders show up empty, when i connect via smb the dashes are not there but the folders still show up empty. This happens on two of my machines I tried accessing it from a friends machine and it worked fine strange, any ideas,

The "no entry" type symbol means that you do not have permission to access the contents of that folder. Seeing this symbol is a feature of the AFP protocol which is why you don't see it when accessing via CIFS (I don't *think* CIFs shows such symbols - but I'm not the most experienced with CIFS), however you likely still have the same permissions issue if you are connecting as the same user.

How to fix this will depend on your needs - as it appears there are other users of the NAS from your comments it is possible this restriction is intentional. Or are you the administrator/owner of the NAS? Would need to better understand your setup to assist fixing this (if in fact it needs fixing)

Yes I am the owner of the NAS and admin, I had user setup in my name before where you had to log in to access the files, but I changed it back to guest access since i started having the problem.

That may be exacerbating the problem.

How do you want permissions to be setup on you NAS? Can you describe what you actually want (eg who can / cannot access what data) and then we can figure a way to fix the permissions to meet that goal.

Hi Sorry didnt have time to check out the board for the past days. Initially I wanted it to be open to all who live with me, then later I wanted to restrict some folders so I could put some personal files in them, when I was trying to do this I discovered some of the folders were locked as I mentioned above and since then I havent really got a chance to set it up.

If you just have a few files you want to restrict access to, put them in your home share - only you have access to that.

You mention using AFP & CIFS - it's usually best to stick to just one protocol. Running into permissions problems is common when using multiple protocols as often the settings for each can be different. If you have Windows machines that will be accessing the NAS, stick with CIFs. If only Macs, then CIFS or AFP.

To fix the permissions on a specific share so that all users can access them again do the following:

  • In Frontview, Go to Shares -> Share Listing

  • Select the Share you wish to modify my clicking on the AFP or CIFS icon for that share depending on the protocol you will use

  • Scroll to the bottom of the window that appears and ensure Advanced Permissions are set to Read/Write for both Group and Everyone rights - then press apply

  • Select the Advanced Options Tab in the upper right of the window

  • Set Group Rights and Everyone Rights to Read/Write and ensure the boxes "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders" and "Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files" are both checked - then press apply

  • Disconnect your Mac/PC from the ReadyNAS completely and then reconnect to the share - you must do this to ensure the above changes are seen by your Mac/PC


You should have full read/write access to all files & Folders

Note that the above grants the least restrictive rights to a share - any user that has access to the share will have full access to all files. But equally these settings should prevent you hitting any problems in future, whether you connect as guest or any other user. If you do decide to use CIFS and AFP, you must perform step 2 for both CIFS and AFP settings

Great tip! I was having trouble accessing a couple of shares from my Mac, while accessing the others over AFP. I dropped all the connections and re-connected using CIFS (SMB://192.168.x.x/<sharename>) and that has solved this Mac issue. Thanks!

You can't do this when the NAS is joined to an Active Directory domain without destroying existing ACL security settings for the share. It's not a good idea to give Everyone Read/Write permissions anyway. So what is the fix when this happens (Mac users get the red circle + white dash) when the NAS is joined to Active Directory? This started happening after I updated to RAIDiator 4.2.21. Windows users aren't having any problems, *some* Mac users aren't having any problems but most are. I thought that maybe it was an AD expiring password problem but we tested that and that isn't the issue. What does seem apparent is that any Mac that was connected to the CIFS share prior to upgrading the NAS is having the problem while no Macs that started using the Samba share after the upgrade are.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Moved to thread viewtopic.php?f=28&t=64104 - note that Mac OS X 10.7 does not display this issue while 10.6 does. Easiest fix is to upgrade to OS X Lion.
