Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

Hi,
I bought a new Readynas 104 as soon as it became available, and am trying to install apps from the genie marketplace. The service is enabled, and I created an account on the website and logged in on the nas admin page.

I am presented with a list of apps. Now, if I click 'Buy' on an app like SABnzbd, it just sits there saying it is being installed and never completes. This happens for all apps.

Why does the link say Buy but not give you a price or ask you for any payment info? Am I doing something wrong?

Also the Genie marketplace website has not been updated to include the new 104 so it says I have no apps available there.

Can I purchase an app from somewhere like ReadynasXtras like I could on the Duo and install via the update function still? How does this work?

This new readynas range seems very rushed out, there are parts which obviously have not been updated to accommodate it!

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

The addon installer format (SDK) has changed with the new OS, the older versions are not compatible.

The Genie staff visit here every few days, you may want to call tech support for quicker response.

Beware ye the promise of fool's gold and Genie apps...... There might be some, but IMHO Netgear have just jumped on the "app" bandwagon. I've been very disappointed.... (NV+ v2)

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

OK I was able to fix this. It turns out that when you click 'buy' it is far from the one click experience Netgear promises it to be. Where the box opens and says it is installing, what is supposed to happen it it launches the genie apps web site. So where it hangs saying it is installing, it isn't supposed to install anything at all. They could have got around this by just including a 'click here if you are not redirected' link as all its supped to do is launch a browser. poor.

You are then supposed to manually buy the app from the website and select for it to install the apps to your nas device.

The red herring was that the apps for the new range is listed as their own duplicate app entries, right at the last page of the buggy, slow, horribly designed website. So you have to click next page, wait 5 minutes, repeat 5 times to get to the end of the list and find the small selection of apps available. Then you can purchase and install one.

It is also worth noting that there is a lot of apps (as listed in the apps section here http://netgear.com/landing/storage/home.html#4 ) which are simply not available despite it saying so in the marketing for this device. For example: Transmission. Simply not available for the 104. Even if I could get a compatible package from the developer, it seems Netgear have removed the ability to install app packages manually, instead forcing you to buy from their marketplace which is a buggly, slow, horrible purchasing experience.

Netgear really dropped the ball making such a big deal about the apps but putting almost 0 effort into it.

random, how are you with SSH? If you run the command below, does it load up?

# apt-get update; apt-get install transmissionr6; touch /apps/transmissionr6/.localapp

Hmm, it appears to have installed:

And it says in the log app successfully installed. However, it doesn't show in the Installed Apps section and I can't access it via port 8181 as you usually can. How do I remove what has been installed?

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

Try downloading this file to your PC: http://apt.readynas.com/packages/readyn ... .1_all.deb

Then upload it in Dashboard via System>Settings>Install Firmware. Does it show up in GUI then?

edit: much simpler, after the apt-get, do this, and the app will show up in GUI:
# touch /apps/transmissionr6/.localapp

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

Thanks! Getting closer. That package installs and shows up under apps. I can get a response on port 8181, and can get a login prompt. Just trying to find the credentials now, the usual admin/password or admin/password1 from previous releases doesn't work.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

Try admin/admin

The interface of the genie website leaves a lot to be desired. 1995 called, it wants its html back?
https://genie.netgear.com/UserProfile/# ... :service52
The AJAX code on there is very slow, hard to direct link to pages, no search/sort functionality, yuck.

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

Thanks chirpa, all is now working perfectly. All this hassle just to install an app! Was so much easier on my duo v1. Netgear really need to sort this out, their genie website is horrible.

I'll make a donation later for Transmission.

Updated my post above, don't need to manually upload the .deb file, just 'touch' a file.

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

Some really weird things going on with the apps on this device. Quote often if I log into the admin page, it will only list maybe 2 apps and not the other 3 I have installed, meaning I can't start/stop them from that page. The apps are live though, because I can go to their address and use them.

I can reboot the device, and sometimes it will then show all installed apps.

Today however, some apps were not responding, and did not show up in the admin page. I went to the genie marketplace and it just showed available for install. So I hit install to my device, and lo and behold they are now avilable and working again.

So it seems like somehow the readynas uninstalled these apps. Or at least stopped working and became uncontrollable from the admin page.

This is an ABYSMAL device. My readynas duo v1 was a million times more stable than this POS.

If anyone is thinking of buying this device and using add-ons, DO NOT DO IT.

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

I couldn't agree more. I purchased the RN104 earlier this week and have spent DAYS trying to figure out how to install the PLEX and TRANSMISSION apps. I still have yet to figure it out and I don't know SSH. It's ridiculous that you can't upload the .bin files from the GUI. Funny thing is, I sell tech products for a living, and the person who trained us on these devices insisted how easy it is now to install apps and setup/ manage this unit. So far I'm not too impressed.

Anyways, I have the .bin files saved to my desktop. Has anyone had luck running plex on here? I don't even see it in their app store, I had to download it from the plex website.

Can someone walk me through how to install an app with ssh (or link me) on this unit? I'm new with the command line.. i have putty and can authenticate to the rn104, but after putting in my username and password it says "welcome to readynas" and then just terminates the session... any help is much appreciated.

I opened a tech support case regarding the installation of 3rd party apps (i.e. plex). We'll see how this goes..

Thanks for your answer but I still not get it !
I understood that I have apply that code but which tool do you use to do that ? Is it within the Readynas OS ?

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

You can install bin files by system - settings - install firmware. Just make sure you do the dependencies first.

But be prepared for them to disappear from the admin page so you lose control to start/stop the service as it does it even with apps from the genie store.

I can't believe how slow they are fixing these bugs, I haven't had a single firmware update since i've had the device.

This is definitely beta level, they should never have released it in this state.

On the x86 units PLEX is under apps -> installed.
Just flip the switch, wait a few minutes while downloading, and it works automagically.
You do not eve have to turn on genie...

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

The 104 is an ARM unit not a x86_64 one. Yes, as you mentioned it is pre-installed on the x86_64 units.

I'm having so many problems with the I don't even know where to begin.
-You can't manually add apps with the firmware tab
-DLNA is hit or miss, sometimes my smart TV picks it up but other times not (I had to enable tivo for it to work?)

I have managed to get Transmission client installed on NAS 104 using this link http://apt.readynas.com/packages/readyn ... .1_all.deb to download the file to my pc and then upload the file using the firmware update option. My DLNA is working and all of my films are recognised my prblem was that my fils restarted after 10 mins. Manyy thanks to randomnut and chirpa.

Nice, I just got transmission running as well. So, does the os6 recognize .deb files but not .bin files? I wonder if there is a way to convert? The plex app i have is .bin so it won't upload in firmware update. Hmm.

Re: Genie Apps on new readynas 104 not installing?

I've managed also to install Transmission manually (and use it) via the firmware tab but after a restart of the NAS even if the apps was listed on the "welcome page" of the NAS, they didn't appeared in the Applications tab ! After a few restarts and research I found a workaround : when clicking the Applications tab it ask the login/pwd to connect to the Genie Market. I canceled the login dialog box and then my apps suddenly appeared again in "Installed applications" !!!
It seems they rushed a little bit before lunching this product.
