Hard Drive Temperatures in ReadyNAS RN314

Currently my Hard Drives are running tempertures of

DISK 1 - 40C

DISK 2 - 49C

DISK 3 - 48C

DISK 4 - 40C

Is this normal? 49C is getting a bit up there? Drives in my computer are all running around 27C, fan speed on the unit is running at 1021RPM, CPU 48C and System 30C

Those are pretty power-hungry (8.1 watts each when idling, 9.5 when in use).  So I'm not surprised by the temps.  Netgear's stance is that your temps are in spec (which is true enough).  Though there is some evidence that drive life is shortened somewhat at your temperatures.

There are two paths to lowering them (and I haven't personally explored either...)

https://community.netgear.com/t5/New-to-ReadyNAS/Definitive-RN314-cooling-guide/m-p/940917 is a older post that tweaks fan settings.  I'm not sure if they will work with the newer firmware, and changing the fan operation could impact warranty.

There was also a post a few days ago from someone who left the front door open on their NAS and attached an external fan with tie-wraps to the disk cage.  Totally ugly, but it did lower his drive temps (and would have no warrany impact).

Would be good to see a setting for fan speeds in future firmware updates, the unit has been asleep for the last 10 hours and have woken it up and the temps are around 22C

The drive is supported under the hardware compatability list and the fan should be running accordingly, slight increase in fan speed for this type of drive would be good.

Just had another WD4000F9YZ-09N20L0 fail in my NAS unit yesterday this time  it was in bay 4 last one was in bay 3, these drives are a month short of 2 years old, what would be causing this? HEAT?

~48C is higher than I'd want.  So it is possible.

It could also be bad luck.
