How to schedule backup that won't run beyond certain time?

Hello.

I have two ReadyNAS 3200's that backup various shares to one another every night during early morning hours. One is running 4.2.19 and other one is on 4.2.17 but will soon be upgraded to 4.2.19. One of the shares occasionally experiences many changes so the incremental backup might take up to 20 hours to complete. When this happens the backup crosses into working hours and ends up hogging all of the bandwidth. I'd like the incremental backup to terminate by 5am but I don't know how to define the parameters.

Here's how it's set now: The one running 4.2.19 is set to run remote rsync and copy data from other NAS 3200 to itself. It scheduled to run 7 days/week, to perform backup every 6 hours between 19:05 and 22:05. How do I change it so that it will automatically terminate whether it's done or not by say, 5:00am?

There is no option in the nas that will terminate a backup base on a given schedule. This is a limitation for now.

Re: How to schedule backup that won't run beyond certain tim

Is there a way I can add a job to the ReadyNAS cron scheduler? I'd like to wire a simple script that would kill (gracefully) any running rsync processes, or run whatever the ReadyNas command is for rsync job termination? Would such a mod void any kind of warranty or support I may have with the units?

You would have to install the EnableRootSSH addon and make the changes manually. This can affect your software warranty if something breaks in that area. Please contact support for details.

@ab4ok - were you ever able to solve this? I'm considering buying two more ReadyNAS for work, using rsync between both and would only like the backup to take place 7pm-7am.

I don't know the first thing about cron jobs, but if ReadyNAS support were able to hand-hold then I could give it a go.

Did you get yours working?
