How to setup UPS backup on 5 Readynas systems via usb cable?

I have 5 Readynas X6/600 units and a single APC UPS backup for all of them and extremely unreliable power from the power company. I was wondering if I could setup the UPS to connect with a USB cable to all 5 systems using a USB Hub?

So that the Readynas system can auto shut down during a prolonged power outage.

Please let me know if this has a chance of working or a waste of time.

No you can't share the UPS that way. However you can share the UPS. You need to connect the power cable for your router/switch to the UPS as well and share the UPS from one NAS over your network to the other units.

You need to configure settings under System > Power > UPS on each NAS unit, both to share the UPS from the NAS the UPS is connected to via USB (power cable from the NAS also needs to be connected to UPS of course) and to connect to it from the other units.

So the Readynas # 2, #3, #4, #5 can all monitor the USB connection on the UPS connected on Readynas #1 unit and shutdown in there is a power outage.

I see it asking for an IP address.

If that is the case, my hat is off to the engineers who design this unit. This is very smart thinking.

Yes. It's a feature of NUT (Network UPS Tools) which is used by the ReadyNAS (you can see it in the GPL or you could see the Config in a System > Config Backup)

Of course you need a working ethernet connection, a UPS that is compatible with the ReadyNAS and the UPS must be able to handle the load of all the devices

I am curious, is NUT(Network UPS tools) a 3rd party application that has been installed as a service within readynas or is this something that Infrant created on its own.

In any event, the readynas is so much more advance than my terastation live which is my other RAID system.

Like most NASes the ReadyNAS uses a mixture of 3rd party open source, 3rd party proprietary and their own proprietary stuff. You can see the open source code that's used here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2649/~/gpl-open-source-code-for-programmers

NUT is 3rd party software I believe. See http://www.networkupstools.org

Yes the ReadyNAS has a rich feature set. A lot of work over many years has gone into them.

This is a great feature (I use it, but only 2 ReadyNAS's), but don't forget that the switch used to connect all the devices must also be plugged into the UPS!
