Since for as long I can remenber I have had this problem and if I cant find a way around I need find another NAS, maybe another brand...
Using Mac OS X, AFP share, Gigabit Ethernet, Cat 5e wires. WD Red 3TB x4. Sceduled defrag and balance.
Copying to and from goes sometime superfast. Seeing speeds 70-100Mb.
Sometimes it stucks on "preparing for copy" for 5 minutes and then starts to copy, often pauses with slow or no transfer for some periods.
Does not matter of the size of what I´m copying, even if I can probably see it more often with big och many files to copy.
The same problem appears when to delete. Sometimes superfast, sometime super slow.
Please help! It´s extremly annoying.
What firmware are you running?
Have you looked at disk health recently? How about the ethernet stats?

How do I check disk health?
Download the logs and look in disk_info.log
