Jbod possible in readynas duo?
I've already read a lot on the readynas duo thing and i was wondering. Does the device allow jbod devices without reformatting?
I have a setup with 1 1TB disk and a 2TB disk that i just want to access over the network without going trough a whole move operation and reformatting in some exotic format.
And does the device support regular Raid configuration? (thats for in the future)

Which duo model do you have? Checking the firmware is the easiest way to tell. Or use this guide: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/

ReadyNAS uses its own disk format. You can't keep existing data on disks and put them in the system.
Duo v1 is also very old and end of life.

As Chirpa says, the v1 is quite old.

All Readynas use a linux format (ext or btrfs filesystems, depending on the platform), and they all need to format the internal drives. This destroys any data on them.
Usually in a NAS "jbod" means using the disks independently (one volume for each disk), and doesn't mean using an already formated disk "as is". The duo v1 (and all ReadyNAS) support jbod. The duo v1 also supports RAID-1 disk mirroring - giving you some protection against disk failure. (You still need to back NAS up though...).
The v1 will give you about 20 MB/s throughput on a gigabit network. The RN102 is the current entry-level product and it is 3-4 times faster, and has several features that aren't in the v1. At the moment, you can get an RN102 (diskless) for $130 US (at amazon). The v1 is limited to 2 TB disks (both internal and USB). Also, the v1 has no warranty from Netgear (it is not transferable when you buy used) So keep these facts in mind if you negotiate for the v1.
If you do buy it, make sure it has both disk trays and all the screws for those trays. You can't use the NAS w/o them, and replacing them usually costs more than the duo v1 is worth.
BTW, I do have a v1, which I use for backing up newer and bigger NAS. Though I'll buy a newer faster model when it fails.
