Kernel Panic, Random Failures, Data is ok - ReadyNas NV+ V1

Hi:

I hope someone can help.

I have a 5 year old ReadyNAS NV+, four 2TB Seagate HDs (that 2 years old), running a relatively recent version of the OS.
The ReadyNas has a base setup (other than a Logitech Squeezebox server).
It has been rock solid for 5 years. Runs on a UPS and has never been abused.

One day it had a kernel panic. Then tried to reboot but would kernel panic again. Then booted partially and would get stuck with no message.
It finally booted and data looks ok. SmartStats show drives are ok. I tried to copy data off it and it kernel panicked after 1GB of data transfer.

I tried re-seating the drives and expansion memory.

Any suggestions? Should I open up the unit further and try reseating CPU or ???

This has been a great box and I have recommended it to a lot of people. It now is failing me.

I would really appreciate your help in finding a way to get my data off it and then to make it stable again (if possible). But data is most important now.

Can I open a ticket with Netgear also? I did not see a way to do that.

Thanks,
Lee

Re: Kernel Panic, Random Failures, Data is ok - ReadyNas NV+

Lee,
Can you contact Tech Support:
https://my.netgear.com/myNETGEAR/support.asp

Register the 13 digit serial # of NAS. Can you attach logs, on the portal, if available.
Status >> Logs> Download all logs.

We will probably need remote access. This would be detailed later.

Re: Kernel Panic, Random Failures, Data is ok - ReadyNas NV+

Hi Marto:

Thanks. I have opened case #20026026

Serial number falls within the range of bad PS serial numbers. Perhaps this is the problem I am seeing?
I have tried to reboot the ReadyNas 20 times and I have not been able to get it up to a running configuration - various flavors of hanging occurs.
Kernel Panic etc. Sometimes it gets as far as getting an IP address but hangs. I have not been able to download the log files yet.
I will keep trying.

Lee

Re: Kernel Panic, Random Failures, Data is ok - ReadyNas NV+

I got a response from Netgear 2nd level support.
I was told to do a system level install with a pointer to a link on how to do it.
The link was the Ultra 6 FAQ page. I have a NV+ V1.

This of course eroded my confidence in the response.

Any thoughts from the community?
Can I damage the data on my drives by doing this?
From my own research I would need to hold the reset button in with a paper clip for 5 seconds when powering up.
This would copy the O/S from the flash to the hard drives.

What have your experiences been with this?

Thanks,
Lee

Kernel Panic, NV+v1--OS re-install

Lee,
We in Tech support advise an OS Re-install quite regularly.
To emphasize, it is a reload of the Operating system, and does not affect
data on disks.

In your case, refer to this link. Pages 23 & 24.

http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... 6Dec11.pdf

If you had the Power supply issue, you would not have a digital display, and the only thing
on would be the fan. This is not your current issue.

Marto,
