Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

Hello everybody,

Yesterday was like any other day for my ReadyNAS Ultra 4 which I use primarily as a media storage device, then everything in my Media folder dissapeared << poof >> !

FrontView now shows "Disk space 348 GB (6%) of 5548 GB use" when it ought to be closer to 4TB.

The remaining space is the size of what was an unmounted-at-the-time Backup share, and all its contents are still there.

The only thing that was different about yesterday was that I was indexing my Music Library for the first time with NetGear's Plex server for the Nighthawk X10 router (model R9000). I doubt that could have been the cause, but that's what the ReadyNAS was doing at the time this happened.

My system:

RAIDiator 4.2.31

Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 4 disks
Status: Redundant

All disks are green

I use OSX and usually access the ReadyNAS shares via AFP. And now when I try via CIFS I get a "this file server will not allow any additional users to log on". When I search for the share's contents via Windows or Android file programs, I can't see the contents either.

MDGM suggested in another post to try to rename the share, Apply, then rename the share back. I tried that but it didn't seem to have any impact.

I've generated logs in the hopes that this is an easy fix, but I can't seem to attach a .zip to this post...

Thanks for your help and for looking into this with me!

-Ben

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

UPDATE: I have now toggled off/on Guest share permissions for both AFP and CIFS, and then rebooted.

It didn't help in this instance.

I'm afraid to perform the volume scan on reboot, so I haven't done that, yet...

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

If anybody can, somebody please help!

I can't access anything that was in the Media share, and I'm afraid to touch my ReadyNAS for fear of overwriting the missing contents!

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

Perhaps contact paid support (my.netgear.com).  Though if they think you'll need data recovery, that is expensive.

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

Based on the info I’ve provided is this already a data recovery issue?

Thanks Stephen

The 4 TB drop in used disk space suggests that it is.

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

Shoot,

Is there something I can search for in the logs to find out how this happened?

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

The renaming of the share sounds like something suggested for a different situation.

Do you have a backup of the data from your media share?

You could send through the logs if you like (see the Sending Logs link in my sig) but I think it's doubtful it's going to show what happened here.

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

From a quick look at your logs I'm not sure how the share was deleted.

Re: Missing Share Drive Files & Folders

UPDATE: I have paid NetGear to attempt remote data recovery. They've looked at all my logs (including Root SSH), but there seems to be no explanaition. My data just completely vanished.

They're right when they say "a NAS is not a back-up"...! So make sure you have one!
