NAS to front USB HDD backup keeps freezing
I am continuosly having issues backing up 500gb of data from Readynas Duo V1 to an external HDD.
I am trying to do full backup of C but every time it seems to start ok but when i come back in the morning the external HDD activity light has stopped and the readynas webpage is unreachable, i can ping it ok but cannot log into it.
I have tried leaving it for like 2 days and nothing changes so am at a loss.
It does back up some of the files so it seems to work but just gets stuck midway through.
I have read about the possibility that the external HDD may go into sleep mode but surely this wouldn't happen if a transfer was in process.
HDD im using is 1TB Hitachi Deskstar formated to EXT2.
I have found the Hitachi Feature Tool which as far as i can see has an Advanced Power option, Is this what i would change to turn off sleep mode ???
Would really appreciate anyones help.

Re: NAS to front USB HDD backup keeps freezing
if a transfer was in process, external HDD should not go into sleep.
Could you send me the logs? I need to check.

Re: NAS to front USB HDD backup keeps freezing
See log below i presume this was what your after ? I have looked into the backup job log and it says none exist.
I know the disc has errors which is why im trying to get the data backed up. I had a power surge which took out the other drive so i am currently in need of this backup to work.
Mon Apr 8 19:16:05 WEST 2013 System is up.
Mon Apr 8 19:15:43 WEST 2013 A previous run of backup job is still running. Check if that backup job has stalled, or you may need to adjust the backup interval to account for the amount of data you are backing up. [Job 006]
Mon Apr 8 19:14:07 WEST 2013 Improper shutdown detected. To ensure data integrity, a filesystem check should be performed by rebooting the NAS through Frontview with the volume scan option enabled.
Sun Apr 7 04:00:21 WEST 2013 Disk 1 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. Please replace this disk as soon as possible. Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.
Sun Apr 7 00:40:40 WEST 2013 Backup started. [Job 006]
One of my previous attempts
Wed Dec 5 22:07:33 WET 2012 System is up.

Re: NAS to front USB HDD backup keeps freezing
I checked your log by even provided, you must clone current bad drive using Knoppix livecd.
your drive has 4095 Reallocated sectors failed
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 001 001 036 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 4095
Use a Knoppix 6.2 Live CD for this guide. Can be found at www.knoppix.net
Using dd_rescue command allows you to copy data from one drive to another block for block. This is especially useful for recovering a failed drive. Often when a drive fails, the drive is still accessible, it has just surpassed the S.M.A.R.T. error threshold. dd_rescue allows you to ignore the bad sectors and continue cloning the bad drive to a new healthy drive.
1) Connect your old drive and new drive to your PC
2) Boot up using your Linux live CD
3) Launch a terminal window.
4) Run fdisk -l to make sure the system sees both of the hard drives.
5) Run hdparm -i /dev/sdx on both of the drives to find which drive is your source drive and which drive is your destination drive
6) Once you know which drive is which you can start the clone process.
dd_rescue /dev/sdx(source disk) /dev/sdx(destination drive)
7) You will see the process start, just keep an eye on it, it might take a few hours for the clone job to finish, depending on the size of the drive.
Once the process is complete, there will be no notification, the transfer will just stop and you will see the terminal prompt again.
If you see a lot of errors or see that there is no more data being shown as succxfer: it means the drive got marked faulty by the kernel. At this point reboot the system and make sure you know which drive is which again, as it is possible they lettering might switch. Run the dd-rescue command again but this time with -r option. This will start the cloning again but this time will start from the back of the drive and will make sure to get the data that has not been cloned yet.
