NV+Sudden Shut Down; Still Booting

Hi. We have a ReadyNAS NV+ in our office, which is also hooked up to an external HD as an extra back up system. Yesterday, without warning, NAS closed down on all of our computers (4 computers) and is will not open. I tried opening NAS from each computer, but I get the following message: "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection." I was able to log on to Front View briefly yesterday and saw some issues in the logs, but was then disconnected from the site and can no longer access Front View from any browser on any computer. The IP address on the front of NAS has not changed. Then, I restarted our NAS system, but it has been "booting" for over an hour now. I would like to do a cold restart by unplugging the power source for a few minutes, but I don't want to do this while it is still booting.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Did you just update to 4.1.10? Do you have 1GB RAM installed in your unit?

Force power off the unit, remove the disks (label order), hook them up to an internal SATA port in your PC and check them using vendor tools: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/how_can_i_verify_that_my_disk_is_bad

Re: NV+Sudden Shut Down; Still Booting

I didn't manually update to 4.1.10. I'm not sure if the settings are set so the system updates automatically. The front screen on the system said this morning that there is 44/456 GB free.

I have tried holding down the power button several times, but it's not shutting down. Can I unplug, or will that cause me to lose everything?

Re: NV+Sudden Shut Down; Still Booting

Since you can't safely shutdown the unit you will need to force it to shutdown.

The most common cause for the NAS getting stuck on booting would be a bad disk. So after powering down the NAS you should check that first.

You may also wish to run a few passes of the memory test: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good

Re: NV+Sudden Shut Down; Still Booting

Thanks, mdgm. I will unplug from the power source and hope we don't lose everything! Fortunately, NAS is set up to back up into our external HD, should there be a loss. I will use the links you sent me to determine if a disk is bad and determine if we have enough memory.

Re: NV+Sudden Shut Down; Still Booting

What I meant about 1GB RAM was related to the other thread you posted in. 4.1.10 doesn't work well with a lot of 1GB modules but it does work with 256MB modules, so if you had updated to 4.1.10 that would've been a possible cause of this issue.

NetGear does not support using 3rd party RAM and the stock 256MB RAM module should be sufficient.
