NV+ file transfer dropouts

My setup is in my sig. OS = Win7 x64 Ultimate w/SP1. Tested the same with 2 different PCs connected to my NetGear Gigabit switch. Tried rebooting the NV+ after each test scenario, but no difference.

Mode of transfer: CIFS, over Windows Explorer via Wired LAN.
"Enable fast CIFS writes" = OFF (Tested with ON, same results as below)
"Disable full data journaling" = ON

NV+ with JF (Jumbo Frames) ON = Write speed of 6-7MB/s (sustained)
NV+ with JF OFF = Peaks at 20MB/s, can do a sustained transfer at 13-15MB/s, but it'll lockup after a few large files and hang completely. My guess is that it cannot handle this write speed and as a result hangs.

NV+ with JF ON

As a workaround, I've put JF ON so that the NV+ isn't overwhelmed by the write and can catch up with the files being transferred to it. Although it still stops (see img above) to catch up (my guess), it still manages to continue and transfer all the files.

My RNPP has JF ON and performs perfectly on the same switch, same PCs

Tried the stuff here, still can't figure out why it can't write for continuous periods without locking up completely. It could be a load issue, but unfortunately I'm not able to get the NASMon addon to work either.

Re: NV+ file transfer dropouts

same thing happens to me. the NAS is OK with small files (i use it as a host for my MP3s and iTunes has no problem reading them), but when i go to transfer large files (ex. writing large backup files from Retrospect), it will hang/lock/freeze for many minutes at a time.

Win7 x64, NV+, 4x1TB drives, Linksys E3000 router. everything at the latest firmware/driver/whatever.

JF didn't make a difference. MTU 1492 or 1500 didn't make a difference. i don't see anything crazy in any of the logs. the NV+ just sits there, and then Win7 thinks the connection is dead, and BOOM, failure.

Re: NV+ file transfer dropouts

Not sure if this makes a difference, but of the 4 disks, the last disk had high values on the following:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 196 196 000 Old_age Always - 1390
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 197 196 000 Old_age Offline - 1170
199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 187 187 000 Old_age Offline - 3703

Re: NV+ file transfer dropouts

I have a similar problem with my NV+ (4.1.7). I've search multiple form posts, reinstalled network drivers, mucked with various registry settings, two different network adaptors. I see NO errors on the network devices on both the Windows and NAS side. I now have a simple repro case and work-around. After a fresh reboot of the Windows box, I'm able to copy up to 60G continuously without a problem (haven't tested more). Wait a few hours, and the first large file will fail immediately. No packets are copied, but after about 30 secs I will get "The specified network name is no longer available". Follow that with a small file copy or any size read, and everything works fine. Note, A (sparse?) file is created on the ReadyNAS the same size as the one your trying to copy. It has no data (and yes, I was fooled by this and lost data)

Here is a network trace of the following command: http://mpsharp.com/misc/BadCopy.pcap

I would support a theory that said something in Windows 7 changed in the last few months to cause this problem. I was successfully copying 10-60GB on a nightly basis for at least 6 months before this problem crept up, but it also corresponded to a complete reinstall of Windows 7 SP1. I have not tried this without SP1 installed, but it's certainly a possible culprit.

My support contract and warranty are long expired, but I would be extremely grateful is someone has a solution for this.

Re: NV+ file transfer dropouts

I just verified that restarting the workstation service also resolved the problem for me. Unfortunately, the restart fails the second time, so I can't automate this work-around.

Fortunately I had a spare new disk, swapped it in the NAS, let it sync the RAID and today morning the speeds were as good as ever.

20MB/ write & 30-35MB/s read speeds over my gigabit LAN.

Re: NV+ file transfer dropouts

I've had speed problems since i bought my "infrant" branded NV+

I had some luck with enabling jumbo frames and increasing the MTU, but if set too high does not allow me to use VNC.

I get about 10 MB/s using CentOS 6 & NFS, samba is a bit slower.

it will freeze usually after about 300-600mb and sit there for 10-20 seconds and then you'll see another chunk....and freeze again

I have 4 brand new drives in the NV+ (seems to make no difference).

i did the optimizations here http://www.readynas.com/?p=310
(disable file journaling etc.)

i also upgraded to 1mb of ram....

i'd love to be able to get this thing working at those higher speeds & without freezing.....
