Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
I need to order some of these screws as well. My NV+ came with 2 drives and no spare screws for the 2 empty bays. :?
I just called support and they wanted a serial number for me to proceed, I'm not at home so I dont have it handy. The rep did say they sell the screws but she didn't sound too sure of herself.
I'll try them again tonight when I have the serial number of my device.

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
I will try the support line when I get a chance. I usually try to avoid calling support because they are ineffective 99% of the time.
It would be great if someone could post a link to a source for these screws.

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
Actually, the fee for the screws is nominal, in fact nothing for a pack of 20, but the shipping is $19.90 This was the VERY BEST that the support people could offer me. This is via "Advanced Ground" (whatever that is) and seems a bit crazy when you can send via USPS, UPS or FEDEx for somewhere between $.50 and $7 (I'm in the continental US). I had to call multiple times over a month before they had any back in stock, as they couldn't simply call me when after they arrived. They're not in the Netgear store (WHY?!?!) where they could be simply ordered, shipped and backordered if necessary.
Netgear's (storage) service people are generally great, but their processes suck.
In general, getting the screws is a pain. Try not to misplace them in the first place. But if you're here (like me) you probably already have....

I agree completely. They must be a very rare screw type if nobody has been able to find a third party supplier. I wonder why would netgear would choose such a strange screw in the first place.

Do you have a case number to reference this call? I used to offer this at $5.99 for shipping/handling before support took over sending them out. $20 for shipping is outrageous for a small packet of screws.

Hi there,
I know this is a late reply and you have all probably found screws by now but here's a link where you can get them.

chirpa are the screws at that ebay link the right size? That link says the screws are 1/4" which is about 6mm which from what you said earlier I think indicates they are the wrong size.

Hard to tell from those images. 4mm or 6mm in length will work, just goes deeper into the HDD holes.

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
The typical pan head screws that come with hard drives are slightly longer than the counter sunk screws that are provided with the ReadyNAS trays.

Hi,
You are right they are a little longer.... well anything up to 2mm as you can see below but they do still fit.

Anyone who has a place in the UK where i can get both screws for the HDD trays and NEW trays with the better locking mechanisme instead of the original pushbutton ones? i bought a ReadyNAS Duo in December 2010 and it has the good HDD trays where the lever release button is pressed down towards the bottom.

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
It should have come with screws. The screws for the trays are all the same. And in fact are the same used for assembly of the chassis. The screws holding the side panels in place, the top panel on top and the fan panel in place. Some of these screws can be temporarily robbed to hold the HD in place in the trays if for some reason you do not have any. You can "borrow" two screws from the top panel, one from each side panel. This gives you 4, two for each drive tray.
On my NVX units that I bought last summer the screws were in the plastic envelope with the registration form and install CD. Since I was already running the latest version of RAIDar, and registered online, the only reason I opened the envelope was for the small bag with the screws. All three of my units (2 x NVX 6 months ago and 1 x NV+ 4 years ago) came with 19-20 screws giving some spares.
Double check your packaging and documentation envelope. I would assume you have already checked the inside of the trays themselves (the NV+ came with the envelope of screws taped to the inside of tray #4). You can install one drive (slot 1) with standard HD pan head screws as the threads are the standard for 3.5" drives, it the heads that are different (flathead vs pan head). Screws for 2.5" drives won't work as they are smaller.
If you still don't have the screws, open a tech support case. If you are unsuccessful with the L1, ask for a supervisor. The Duo as all NAS units, is supposed to come with screws. You cannot get the screws at computer stores or hardware stores (especially in Europe). If the supervisor is unwilling to help, note the case number and post back in this thread with the case number and send a PM to Chirpa with a link to this discussion.

I bought my NV+ used so I didn't get any spare screws. There was 8 spare screws with the Duo when I got that since I got it from new. What about the new and improved trays any idea where those can be bought?

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
The only source I know of is Netgear. Contact Netgear Tech. Support. The Netgear Store shows the tray as for the NV/NV+. If you enter NV+ tray or NVX tray it will take you to the same tray.
A post in this thread by fbmachines (next to last post) states he just purchased a new NV+ (Jan, 2010) and it had the new style trays. There have been posts of member contacting Tech. Support about a defective tray and getting the new style.
There has also apparently been a part number change. In the above referenced thread, the part number is listed as RNDTRAY-10000S, whereas on the Netgear store the part that comes up is RND4TRAY1. Third party stores have listings for the RNDTRAY-10000s, but are either listed as out of stock or special orders. Interestingly those with out of stock, many show the RDN4TRAY1 as in stock, but the image (if they have one) is the older gray handle with round button style.
Some of the older trays may still be in the pipeline as well as NV+ units with the old tray still in the pipeline. For this reason, if I really wanted just the new style is to contact Tech Support and tell them precisely what you want. I don't know that I would order all 4, maybe one to see that I got what I really wanted.
There is a third party source for the screws only in the U.S. They were referenced in another thread, and are a little longer than the stock Netgear screws and are not stainless steel, but will apparently work just fine. They are actually for Dell drive trays, and have the flat head, the same thread, but are 1/4" long rather than the Netgear's 4mm. The holes in the bottom of the drive frame should be deep enough since I have used screws that are at least 5/16" long in them (not in an NAS application, but in a desktop).

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
I'm really strugging on getting some replacement screws for my ReadyDuo RND2120.
I've been to maplin and some specialist pc stores here in the UK and had no success. I rang the netgear UK helpdesk (case no 14803528) who basically told me I had to keep trying stores. I have a 2 TB hard drive sat in packaging because of this simple issue and seemingly no solution.
Has anyone had any success getting these screws from somewhere in the UK?

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
For a temporary fix, if you have one drive already installed, shut down the Duo and remove that drive. You can then remove two of the screws (diagonal pattern) and use them to install the second drive. If you have not installed the first drive, some screws can be removed temporarily from the chassis, the screws holding side panels on, etc. All the screws, except for the fan mounting screws, used to assemble the chassis are the same as the HD mounting screws. They are 6/32" x 4MM flat head screws. These may be difficult to find in the EU area.
There was a post by Zoosoup several posts above with a link to eBay.co.uk for drive caddy screws. Here is the link to the eBay listing. They are a little longer but will still work on hard drives as the threaded holes should be long enough.

Ah thanks for that; the ebay link I'd followed seemed to be for a 1 off sale but that one looks good! I'll order from there and wait rather then borrow from the other drive; a few more days can't be too risky!

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
Actually the trick of only using two screws per drive in a diagonal pattern was suggested on another discussion by a member of the Jedi. They do that as a matter of course in the lab. If they are working on various drives in various machines, it can be quite a chore to change out all those screws. The suggestion to "borrow" screws from the side panels and chassis panels was also suggested by a Jedi. Of course the only disadvantage to either is that it would be best to shut down the unit. But, a few more days won't hurt.

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
It seems that the problem still exists. I recently bought four diskless ReadyNAS Duos, none of them contained screws. My local computer shop insisted that they used standard hard drive screws and supplied me with some. We know from previous posts that this is not the case. After hunting about for a day I phoned Netgear in Sydney and they posted me 32 screws but here are a couple of other solutions:
Being the impatient type I modified standard hard drive screws in the following way. Fit the screw in the chuck of your power drill and with the drill running file down the screwhead to 1mm thick, then using a small file on the edge of the head reduce the head to about 4mm diameter. This will still leave enough recess to fit a good phillips driver. Make sure the screw is a snug fit against the chuck jaws and tighten the chuck by hand to prevent damage to the thread.
Method two, visit your local aviation spares shop. 6-32 1/4 inch countersunk screws are common in the aircraft industry although they cost about 30c each.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know whereabouts I could obtain some of these screws? I don't actually owna drill and the uk does not have many "aviation" spares shops.

Give NTGR support a call.
As a temporary measure you could use two screws per tray.

Sorry for the necro-thread, but I have a relevant question.
The site referenced above lists two different screws for Dell trays; one with an 82 degree angle and one with a 100 degree angle. Which one is appropriate for ReadyNAS trays?
If its the 82 degree angle, then Amazon also has them available at present.

Re: NV+ hard drive tray screws replacement
Per information in another thread, they are 120 degree. I've successfully used 82 degree undercut 6-32 x 3/16 screws. They stick above the tray a bit, but have sufficient clearance. A standard 82 degree didn't engage well with the countersink. The undercut doesn't really engage with it properly, but it engages in a larger radius than the standard, so holds better. If I was willing to drill the holes a bit bigger, they'd have been a little more flush. The head on the 82 degree undercut is thinner than a 100 degree, so I suspect it's the better choice. I have no idea if the Dell 82 degree are undercut or standard.
