Need full rebuild - 3 of 4 drive degraded

A friend of mine has ReadNAS - not sure what model but was purchased in 11/2014 and has 4x3tb drives.
- they noticed front panel says volume degraded
- could *not* access web interface
- could access system and backed up data
- rebooted system and was able to access web interface
- 2 of 4 disks not showing
- they called Netgear T/S and was told 3 of 4 drives degraded/degrading
- they purchased drive at local retail (unsure if compatible)
- when inserted to rebuild, system hung
- data now cannot be accessed
so....
I've suggested they purchase 4 new, compatible drives and rebuild fro scratch.
If we load 4 new drives into system, does it know about old config (volume/shares), or will it treat as new system?
If old config, if we let array build, will at add old shares?
If not, how do we get back to factory to start from scratch and restore data?
Other suggestions?
Thanks

Degraded means one or more drives on your array failed and it entered this mode to be able to continuously use the array. This mode however, you might experience a slow performance on the array hence degraded like having issues accessing the interface etc, but data should be accessible.
Were you able to backup the data while it's accessible?
If you will insert the 4 new drives on the NAS it will be recognized as a new system and will perform a reset to create a new volume and system on the disks. Old configurations and shares will not be on this volume.
You can either Clone the old drives or use 3rd party software like ReCLAIMe to recover data from the disks or Purchase a Data recovery service either from NETGEAR or 3rd Party service providers.
If you have backup of your data then it would be easy to get the new drives to setup and then transfer the data to it.
