Network load

Hi,

Invetsigating a very slow network, I noticed that communication between PC and ReadyNAS NV+ was constant and heavy.
PC receives more that 2mB per second while PC sends 35kB.

This is of course impacting the network speed. I can't link this to any change but I've upgraded the Raidator version in last couple of weeks.

Does anybody have a clue what happens and also which kind of information is exchanged between NAS and PC !?

Cheers

Re: Network load

If I am not accessing the NAS from the PC, I don't see any traffic. I see occasional SSDP packets and name queries; nothing else. Does wireshark give you any hints?

Re: Network load

I didn't check with wireshark yet but I will.
The behaviour you describe is indeed the one I expect 😉

Re: Network load

Do you have the NAS drives mapped on the PC? If so, a PC app might be creating the traffic (virus scan, indexing for search, etc).

Re: Network load

Wireshark shows that most traffic happens between port 445 (microsoft-ds) on NAS and mctp (1100) on PC.
Yes drives are mapped, it's indeed possibly the indexing service, but those share are not listed in the "to be indexed" list. Also the indexing is described as being complete...

Re: Network load

The indexing options control panel app lets you see/modify the directories that are searched. You could also go into services, and temporarily stop the windows indexing service.
