NAS arrived Tuesday, and I put in 8 brand new Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives, powered on, let it start up and accessed it via http to its ip to set it up (non cloud method). The NAS started doing an resync. While it is doing this, it shows an alert on the top about increased command timeouts on disk 5. I then went and checked all the drives, and 6 out of the 8 all have command time outs, around 10-16 each. These drives are brand new. I can understand 1 drive being faulty new, but not 6 (7 see below) all at once.
The NAS has also shutdown on 2 occaisions for no apparent reason, one time I plugged in a UPS into the rear usb port so it could monitor it, but this UPS has been connected to my other Netgear NAS boxes and never had that effect.
Some time later, maybe 4 -5 hours after, the NAS decided to fail disk 7 and remove it from the volume. I then removed the drive and tested it in a pc with seatools. It passed all the short tests (SMART, DST, Generic) I ran these around 6 times. While I was testing the drive, the NAS decided to shutdown by itself again.
I took the chance to remove all the drives and test them in the PC, every drive passed all the short tests (SMART, Short DST, short generic) multiple times. I then formatted drive 7 (the apparent failed one) to NTFS, ran an acco bench on it, averaged about 200ish mb/sec. Then I copied 500GB of random CCTV archive footage onto it, it managed around 180mb/sec the entire time. Not a single error or problem.
Powered nas back on, collected the logs, updated FW to current latest. Put drive 7 back in, NAS told me command timeouts are now at 938. Formattted it in webui. NAS then added it back into xraid. I then told the nas to factory default from the gui. It then rebooted and did its factory default. Started up fine and began its initial resync.
The NAS was left over night to finish its resync. The following morning it was at around 98% done, then it turned it self off. I powered it back on and got the logs.
I opened a support ticket Case #40693870, however despite all of the above info in that ticket, and 3 or 4 sets of logs, the ticket was only answered 2 days later with the KB for factory resetting the NAS (which I have done). When I complained on FB to Netgear, they told me to do it via the hardware button not the GUI. Needless I'm not happy with this support.
Can anyone help or advise on whats going on here? To me this looks like a hardware problem in the NAS, as the drives seem fine, however I don't like how the command timeouts are now recorded on the drives. I was thinking of trying a set of different drives, but I don't want to risk damaging it in a faulty NAS. And likewise in reverese with the new drives in an old NAS.

Hi @mperry, I would give back the nas to the seller and ask for a replacement. Depending on who sold it to you and under what circumstances that should be a piece of cake and you will start over your efforts with the replacement hopefully soon having more success.
Good luck and kind regards

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have talked with the retailer and they have issued an RMA for it. Will be a wait for the replacement as its out of stock but hopefully it will be a good one, fingers crossed!
