OS6.1.1 Notification settings

Posting this here in case anyone has a dirty little SSH/CLI hack to turn this off:

Currently all of our NAS drives that we manage are set to alert us when anything goes bang (Disk failure, Volume capacity, temp etc.) however we also get spammed anytime an external HDD is plugged/unplugged. Considering these are all at customer sites and they plug/unplug external drives quite regularly, we are getting excessive notifications :cry:

Logged this to Netgear who advised that this is not possible to turn this off atm and will log it as a feature request with no ETA....

So in the meantime does anyone have any input as to a sneaky way to turn this off so we only get notified about stuff that we need to care about

You could filter the messages and automatically move the messages you don't want to a different folder in your Inbox.

Re: OS6.1.1 Notification settings

That would work for me - the problem is that each time a notification pops up - our director has a mini heart attack that one of the NASes has failed (before reading the rest of the alert) and besides - we have this option for the older NASes that are running the previous Netgear OS.

Re: OS6.1.1 Notification settings

What is the exact message it sends?

It's likely we can find that triggers it and silence it. Example:
# cat /frontview/bin/setup_usb_storage | grep event_push
system("rnutil event_push shell readynasd '<xs:add-s resource-type=\"Log\" resource-id=\"Log\"><Log severity=\"notice\" message-tag=\"LOGMSG_USB_PLUG_NO_FS\" category=\"system\"><args usbtype=\"@conf[2]\"/></Log></xs:add-s>' 0 0");
system("rnutil event_push shell readynasd '<xs:add-s resource-type=\"Log\" resource-id=\"Log\"><Log severity=\"notice\" message-tag=\"LOGMSG_USB_PLUG_NO_FS\" category=\"system\"><args usbtype=\"@conf[2]\"/></Log></xs:add-s>' 0 0");
system("rnutil event_push shell readynasd '<xs:add-s resource-type=\"Log\" resource-id=\"Log\"><Log severity=\"notice\" message-tag=\"LOGMSG_USB_NTFS_FORCE\" category=\"system\"><args usbtype=\"@conf[2]\"/></Log></xs:add-s>' 0 0");

Re: OS6.1.1 Notification settings

the exact message is:

Subject line:ReadyNAS Alert Message (DEMONNAS System: Notice)

Body of the Message: External storage device connected.

Re: OS6.1.1 Notification settings

Looks like its hard-coded in /usr/sbin/readynasd. So would need a feature request to NTGR to have a toggle to remove these annoying emails.

Re: OS6.1.1 Notification settings

Sounds like a nice incentive to try & start re-engineering that readynasd binary 😉

Well that is a pair of dangly, sweaty, hairy testicles.

Cheers for having a nose though on my behalf to see if it was possible.
