By the way, is X-RAID dual redundant as the OS6 says RAID 5 when I click the Volumes tab. If only single redundant, then, can I bump up to RAID 6 as with OS4. I assume this would entail a factory default.
Dear All, what do you think to do main thread on this forum related to OS6 on Legacy NAS?
In this thread there is a lot of important posts, but is tis very difficult to become acquainted with them, especially for new users. Division to sub-threads will help better understand the OS6 on Legacy platform and continue interesting separated threads.
Reaguest for administrator or moderators: could you create that main category: "OS6 on Legacy platform" in "General" category, please?
I expect this has been answered in this thread but I cannot find it. I have a RNPP with 6 2 TB disks running 4.2.26. In order to go from 4.2.26 to 6.1.7 I think I need to upgrade to 6.1.7 and do a factory default with all 6 drives in place. I can not add previously used drives one at a time without doing a factory update correct? After the factory default can I then make it a dual redundant after-the-fact? Thanks Bigbearf
Am still trying to get replicate to work. If I can not get replicate to work between the two platforms I think I will upgrade the RNP6. After reading the forums I think I have to put in my last two 2 TB drives in the RNP6 one at a time and let them be incorporate into the volume and then if all is well install Prepto4to6 x86.bin then R4toR6_6.1.7.bin and reboot then do manual factory default. I expect it will take 2-3 days to reformat the 6 drives. I then will have to try Replicate from 516 to RNP6 or rebuild from backups. Hope this makes sense. Any one with experience with this have any thoughts bigbearf
The Prep add-on is to avoid the need to do a manual factory default. Useful if updating a unit at a remote site or if you'd rather not use the boot menu. If you don't install the Prep add-on the NAS will get stuck trying to boot the new OS off the disks and you will have to do a manual factory default via the boot menu. The Prep add-on places a script which when executed triggers a factory default. The script the Prep add-on leaves is run when the NAS attempts to boot OS6 off the disks just before it would've got stuck without it.
Has anyone else ever noticed that if you shut down a ReadyNAS Pro 6 (via the GUI) running OS6, that it will automatically power itself back on after approximately 5 minutes? I also have an Ultra 4, and it does not exhibit this strange behavior.
Just upgraded for the first time from v4.2.26 to v6.1.8 with my Pro 6! (reason being DVBLogic now releasing their new version of their TV server only on OS6)
First, globally everything went fine. Thanks to the author of the upgrade add-in.
I have only a concern about the fan regularly going too slow and causing some annoying alerts

=> ATCIS: I never noticed such thing on my Ultra2, so I just tried once more to be sure and I confirm than mine is shutting down is less than 30sec.
Mine shuts down just fine also. . . 1.) Log in to GUI 2.) Click on "Shut Down" 3.) Within 30 to 45 seconds NAS is powered down 4.) Wait 3 to 5 minutes (never actually timed it) 5.) Pro 6 turns itself back on
The only way to prevent it from coming back on all by itself is to flip the physical power switch on the back of the NAS. . .
Do you get the same issue on OS4 (you could use a spare disk and downgrade)? If yes then it could be a faulty power supply or something like that. If no, then perhaps there is a compatibility issue of some sort with OS6.
my mistake : I didn't explained myself correctly. My Ultra is powering normally in less than a minute (via GUI or double press on front button), AND it's NOT powering itself back up !. It remains off.

I'm not really sure who you were directing that question to, but if it was me - the answer is NO. This never happened (that I recall) when the NAS was running OS4. Additionally, after further (and continuing) testing, it does not do this 100% of the time. Unfortunately I have a very narrow window of time in which to perform additional testing, as this is an operational NAS. I'll report back with my findings as time permits. . .
is the a way to do a "firmware"-update via ssh? I cannot update my Pro6 with installed 6.1.8RC1 via frontvie. It tells me i have allready the newest "firmware" and the manaul update stops after pressing the uploadbutton, it just shows the normal frontview page after a while. Also tried rebooting with no sucess...

/var/spool/frontview/shutdown/080_Poweron This perl script set the RTC timer to power on the ReadyNAS after 5 minutes by default.

The system is un-changed, no hack.
After some time after the first reboot, the system temperature now stabilizes at 62 deg. and the fan at about 800 rpm. CPU temperature being still at 39 deg. Maybe the reboot did help

But I do have some questions: - is it and will it always be safe to use apt-get upgrade? I've red somewhere in the post it is safe. just wanna be sure - before upgrading, I would still do something like this: rsync -ahHAXv /* /c/osbackup --delete --numeric-ids --exclude={/dev/*,/proc/*,/sys/*,/tmp/*,/run/*,/mnt/*,/media/*,/c/*,/lost+found} so in case something breaks I can restore previous state - proftp is not registered as service? /etc/init.d/proftpd restart Services proftpd restart Do not work => any idea how to restart? Or should i just reboot the Nas?
While some packages may be pinned, an apt-get upgrade is risky. I would do an apt-get update and install just the packages you need and their dependencies. If unsure whether installing something will cause problems as well as maintaining a regular backup (which you should do anyway) I would recommend getting another unit for testing (could be e.g. a 312 or a Ultra 2 you found cheap and updated to OS6) or testing using the VM. If it causes problems in the VM it will probably also cause problems on physical hardware.
systemctl is used for stopping and starting services in OS6.
I hit a snag while upgrading disks on BTRFS that I dont think would happen on Ext4. Maybe someone can assist ? More details in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=76459
