OS6 on Ultra6

Hello guys/girls,

I was willing to follow this :

OS6-now-works-on-x86-Legacy-WARNING-NO-NTGR-SUPPORT

for months now but never found the time...

And guess what now I have time.....

So I did follow the process, did the update, which seems to run properly but I still have two rocks in the shoe dispite digging internet:

-The GUI is proposing me a fw update from 6.9.5 to 6.10.3 can I do it ? what is the last fw Ultra 6 should run on OS6 ?

capture: https://imgur.com/hzFCrBR

-Does anyone succeed to set up the alerts contact ?

I tried two different mail (gmail and hotmail) and none works (gmail was ok on os4)...

thanks for your help.

Regards

Re: OS6 on Ultra6

Whether you update is your choice.  I have not chosen to go beyond 6.9.5 on any NAS except one "sandbox" one, as I am still seeing issues with later versions reported here and nothing added in 6.10.x is something I think I need.  But there is no reason you can't -- there is no version limit for legacy devices on OS6 at this point.

If you have not upgraded to at least 2GB of RAM, it is recommended you do.  All currently selling ReadyNAS have at least that much, and at least one user has reported an issue with a legacy NAS that was solved with more RAM.

Re: OS6 on Ultra6

Thank you for your advice !

Indeed if it's running properly with 6.9.5 and no "bonus" on 6.10.x then I won't play with the devil.

I did the upgrade to 2GB of RAM years ago 😉

Are you using the alerts contact ? Which mail provider is working on yours ?

Re: OS6 on Ultra6

I don't use alert emails, I just check RAIDar and/or the admin GUI religiously.  I probably should implement them on the backup NAS at my brother's place, since it's not always on, but haven't.  One of the 6.9.6 improvements is to Gmail, so you should at least upgrade to that if you use Gmail for alerts.

Re: OS6 on Ultra6

FWIW, I am running 6.10.3 on my OS-6 NAS (my Pro-6 is still on 4.2.31).

I do have email alerts set up on all my NAS (using gmail).

Note if your gmail account doesn't use 2FA and allows less secure apps, you can use the older firmware (just enter the SMTP server, etc).

Re: OS6 on Ultra6

Thank you StephenB,

An old answer from you brought me to the solution:

"Did you enable "Access for less secure appsin the gmail security profile?"

When enable this option in google security the email alerts are working properly.

But as I don't want to enable this option I will setup another email account in the alerts contact.

Just to make sure meaning of the "less secure" bit is clear:  The ReadyNAS is "less secure" only because it knows your gmail password.

Re: OS6 on Ultra6

I just update my Ultra 2 with 2x6TB HDD from 6.9.5.1 to 6.9.6, works fine 🙂
