PLEX - Such Potential but doesn't work for me...

I have a ReadyNAS PRO
Radiator 4.2.19
Plex version v0.9.3.5-0.2.0 installed on my NAS as a Add-On

Plex has so much potential but at the moment I find it so frustrating. When I thought I have it cracked it stops working again.

My problem is mainly getting the files into the Plex Library.

I click on the + to add a new section and enter the relevant data. Sometimes it imports the files and other times it just ignores them.

Is any one else having file scanning problems, or indeed any other problems and have you managed to overcome them.

I will try the Plex forum but I thought I would try here first.

  • first, you don't need to add a new section every time you add content.

create one section for tv and point to your tv folder, another section for your movies.
also, your files and folders have to be named in a consistent/recogonizable manner.

    for example

    tvsection: /media/tv
    movie section: /media/movies

in the tv folder you have show folders, then actual video files..

    /media/tv/dexter/dexter - s01e01 - pilot.avi

    /movies/the matrix/the matrix.avi (or .iso or video_ts files, etc)

you can manuallly rescan and/or have plex rescan periodically and it will detect and scrape whatever you add as long it can be found on imbd or tvdb etc.
  • Yes I've done more or less what you suggest but I still had and have problems.

I guess its not a stable version yet.

Does yours work perfectly or did you have problems with the setup?
  • Well, I have not had any problems and I have a huge library of tv and movies.

I don't actively use plex, even though it has been running without issues.

I use xbmc to watch my video media, and subsonic for my audio.
  • It's a shame that PLEX does not work on the ReadyNas so I guess we will have to wait until the bugs have been ironed out.

Initially it did work (sort of), but was unreliable and strange things would happen. Now it doesn't work at all and won't even scan the files that I point it at.

I'm always willing to give it another go if someone can come up with some suggestions.
  • Hi

I removed Plex from my NAS, restarted NAS, installed Plex again on my NAS, and then restarted NAS again before proceeding with the adding of files to the Plex Library.

    Firstly.

    1. I have all my media files stored on my NAS. When I specify the path to these media files to Plex does it take a complete copy of the media files or simply reference the path to the media files.

    2. With regard to naming of folders etc - Do I have to use lowercase characters and ensure that I have no spaces. (i.e. /c/media/tv_programmes/good_day_news). Should I be using this syntax when naming all folders/files on my NAS which of course is linux based.

    3. It appears that I need to use the naming convention of [morse - S01E01 - Pilot.avi]. Even if a programme only runs for one series, it appears that I still need to use the S01 part in the file name otherwise the programme is not recognised. Is this correct and have others found this too.

    4. I have added all my tv programmes and Plex has recognised all the file names etc and downloaded all the relevant data. I'm now trying to add my movies and now Plex has started to play up again.

My movies are in /c/media/movies/all movies files are here and are not in sub-folders

I press + to add a new section.

    Section type: Movies
    Section name: My Movies
    Media scanner: Plex Movie Scanner
    Primary metadata agent: Freebase
    Language: English

I then add the path to my movies in the folder list which is
    /c/media/movies

In the folder list this is shown as
    movies
    /c/media

    I press Add Section

But nothing happens. The files are not scanned etc.

I have even put a few movies inside another folder such as

    /c/media/movies/atonement/atonement.avi

I then add the path to the actual movie in the folder list which is
    /c/media/movies/atonement

In the folder list this is shown as
    atonement
    /c/media/movies

but still the files are not scanned.

    Does anyone have any suggestions.

    5. One last question - How do I change the artwork for say a tv programme. Plex has selected the incorrect artwork for a programme, so I have downloaded the correct artwork from google but cannot see how to get this into Plex.

    Cheers

    Phil
  • I have looked into using it and have been for a couple of months.

Does a good job but I find it doesn't pick up all the movies I have added into the directory.

    Do you find this problem'?

For instance, I have 100 movies, all normal ones, nothing too out there, all within the IMDB however, it's only picked up about 70.

My WD streamer picks up all of them.

    Any thoughts?

  • I realize this thread's been around for a bit, but would also point out that current PMS addon version is 0.9.5.2.144-ed92bde-x86 ... and isn't it still considered beta? Just sayin' ;) But with this release, which is the one that was available upon my first installation of it, it's been working very well. I can imagine some enhancements, sure. But it beats the pants off everything else I've used before.
