PRO 6 - 2TB to 3TB drives

I've spent the last few days swapping in 3TB drives for my old 2TB drives. I have not done any expansion yet and was wondering how much time it will take for the expansion with all the 3TB drives in place? Will I be able to access the data during the expansion process?

One last question - does the RAID sync go faster when there is less traffic on the device? I've got an empty office today and the last drive seems to be syncing much faster than the previous 5 drives did during regular office hours.

According to the X-RAID documentation, you will have access to it during the upgrade / syncing of disks but then you must reboot after the last sync for the volume expansion.

Syncing always goes faster if no one is accessing and changing data. Even if you don't change data, accessing it makes the unit check to see if data is changed.

I am not sure what you mean. If you are swapping in the drives, how are you preventing expansion???? With Xraid-2 it is an automatic process.

Sometimes the ReadyNAS requires that you reboot to begin expansion. It will perform a RAID sync to copy the data over but may not get any expansion until a reboot. Frontview will indicate it requires a reboot to continue the expansion process.

Yes. So you think he is ignoring the reboot message, and plugging in a new disk instead??? Sounds risky to me.

Re: PRO 6 - 2TB to 3TB drives

I understand I need to perform a reboot to get the expanded space - I was simply waiting for all of the new drives to go through the sync process before doing a reboot.

No one has answered the question(s) will I have access to current data while that expansion is going on and how long will that expansion take to complete.

Expansion is online. You will be able to access your data at reduced performance.

Time it will take does vary depending on capacity of disks etc. You should be able to see an estimate in RAIDar and in Frontview while the expansion is taking place.
