Pro not releasing space

Hope this is posted in the right space, and apologies if this appears twice.  The first time i posted i simply couldn't find it in the forums, I could only view it under my own feed.

I'm having an issue with space not being freed up when I delete.  I do not have snapshots enabled, nor do I have the recycle bin turned on.  But it definately isn't freeing up.  I deleted close to 1/2 TB of data and no change in reported space.

Also, and I'm not 100% on this, but i can't help but feeling like I'm missing some files, there's a sizeable gap in a few years of home video's but it could just be that was when we started using our phones instead of the camcorder.

As part of the troubleshooting process, I ssh'd into the box, and got what i think is a disturbing directory structure (note the ? and }'s ).  Any thoughts on the wierd labels below?

Did you log into the NAS as root?

One option is to back up the NAS, and do a factory default.  Then set up the NAS again, and restore the data from the backup.
