Problem with expansion
I hot-plug:ed a WD 3TB RED to slot 4 on my Ultra running 6.1.6RC10
Problem is that this drive had a windows partition.
NAS found the drive and gave me an error message saying: "Please remove inactive volume to use the disk"
In a short, stressed moment I thought this was done using the DESTROY in Frontview.
(Should remove the partition in windows)
And here we are:
Just stayed like this and then after a while Frontview became unresponsive, I have SSH-access though.
Some questions:
1. What is the NAS doing or trying to do when running DESTROY?
2. Can I unplug the drive without it being corrupt? If so, hot or cold?
3. Can something be one using SSH?
Thanks.

Re: Problem with expansion
DESTROY does what it says, it deletes everything ( the volume)
It is strange that os6 thought it could delete a windows volume and this is probably why the unit has hung.
Are you using xraid? You cannot horizontally expand a flexraid volume.
If you have a backup of the other volume (data) then I would force a power off, remove disk 4 then power on again.
While the disk is out, remove any partitions using a PC.
Then hot add the disk again.
If you don't have a backup then there is risk involved, you could still do the above, but it may be wiser to contact support although you are running an unsupported OS of course.

Re: Problem with expansion
Or what about: unmount it (from CLI with SSH), remove the partitions on it with CLI on the ReadyNAS or from some other machine (if it's no unbacked important data on it) and try a new "hot plug"?

Re: Problem with expansion
# sgdisk -Z /dev/sdX
# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=1000 count=1000

Re: Problem with expansion
Thanks all
First volume is X-RAID
Yes, It is a bit strange that the option was even available for the win partition.
I have a backup and I ended up hot-unplug the drive and then reboot the NAS.
The NAS is working but the old volume is now in DEGRADED mode so it must have recognized the new disk somehow.
In windows I can see that the NAS created 4 partitions on the new disk. (4GB, 500mb, 1.8TB and 900GB).
Maybe it started to include the drive to the first volume anyway?
However, I will remove these partitions and add the drive again as soon the DEGRADED rebuild is done.

Re: Problem with expansion
OK, removed the partitions and added it to the NAS again.
Now it seems to work. DATA volume is rebuilding
