Procedure for replacing one drive in non mirrored mode (DUO)
Hi all
I've got a readynas duo (v1) it is set up with two disks in non mirrored mode, so I have a c volume and a d volume
Disk 1 is failing, I'm contacting netgear about an RMA, but just wanted to know the procedure for replacing the disk
(I'm assuming disk 1 is the c volume, any easy way to verify?
If I copy all data from /c onto an external drive, and then pull disk 1, will all my settings etc remain intact?
When I get my new drive, what happens to all of my shares that were on c, are they recreated? Then I guess I just copy the data back and job done?
In a few places, i've made changes to the apache config and smb config to tweak my setup, Will these settings be retained?
Anything else I should consider?
Thanks
J

Re: Procedure for replacing one drive in non mirrored mode (
I'd suggest making/updating backups of both drives before you begin.

I'm not sure what would happen if you hot-swap the drive. I'd hope that the OS partition is rebuilt from drive 2. If it creates a new OS partition, then drive 1 and drive 2's OS would be out of sync - and of course you'd lose the customizations you've made. Maybe someone from Netgear can comment.
One option is to power down the NAS and clone the failing disk to a good one. If the disk is still fully readable, then that would preserve all the settings and the data. Just make sure the NAS is down when the disk is cloned (and is not powered up until after the new disk is installed).

Thanks for the reply
I asked tech support while arranging the RMA and they confirmed it should keep anything not under /c so will be fine.
Just got to back up my data now, and send the drive off.
