RN 10400 - Boot from USB failed!

Hi,

suddenly my RN 10400 is starting with "Boot from USB" and "Boot from USB Failed!" after several seconds.

It's not booting anymore and therfore not accessible in any way.

I ran the recovery tool which went fine but did not have any effect:

https://kb.netgear.com/29952/How-do-I-use-the-USB-Recovery-Tool-on-my-ReadyNAS-OS-6-storage-system

Now I want to enter the Boot menu and run a Disk Scan.

However I cannot enter the menu.

As the manual suggest I hold the "Reset" button (hidden on the back of the NAS) and power on the system It never ends up in the boot menu.

"Boot from USB Failed!" is the only message that comes out of my NAS.

Anyone has an idea?

Please help me.

Kind regards,

Michael

How can I enter the Boot menu?

1. I powered off the RN 10400

2. I used a straightened paper clip and pressed and held the Reset button.
3. Then I plugged in the power of the RN1040 again

--- keep pressing "Reset" ----

4. It says "Booting from USB"

5. After 10 seconds it says "Booting from USB failed!"

No Boot menu 😞

Not sure you can.

when did you purchase the NAS?  Is it still under warranty (3 years for the original purchaser)?

Hi @StephenB!,

I purchased this NAS several years ago second-hand. No warranty.

If you say "Not sure you can." - any guess how to move forward?

Kind regards,

Michael

I believe the boot flash has gotten damaged.  Sorry to say that if you can't boot into tech support mode, there is no way to repair it - and it isn't under warranty any more.

So the way forward would be to get another OS 6 ReadyNAS.  You can migrate your disks to it.

Does your USB drive have an access LED, and if so, does it appear the NAS is accessing it when trying to boot?  If so, maybe you need to try another USB flash drive, since it sounds like it wants to boot from USB.  Or maybe just re-buld the flash in case something went awry in it's creation.    If not, try another USB port, just in case (even though Netgear says to use the front one, and USB2 is usually farther up the boot list than USB3).

@mmarkhar:  My earlier reply was assuming that you had no USB drive connected to the NAS.  If you do, then try removing it, and then see if you can boot up using the boot menu.
