Sorry - forget my previous message (I can no longer edit it) - that is my 2nd NAS which is making a backup. For the one we have been discussing, it has been restoring for just shy of 7 hours at a speed of 34.6MB/s

I'd expect around 50 MB/s write speed to your RAID-1 volume (using SMB).  

I think after it restores, you might try try testing with cp via ssh.  Your restore should be using cp, so that is comparable.
