Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
yes, of course it is no serious problem. Despite this "little" bug cost me several hours of troubleshooting (disk failure? wrong configuration? etc.)
And my RN102 was configured to shut down at night for various reasons (e.g. blackouts in our area are quite often), so I have to change this to 24/7 and wait.
BTW I dont think it is a good idea to use a beta, because there is no hint in the changelog, that it will fix our problem? But maybe I have overseen this.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
I don't agree, it's a serious problem.
I often use datas of my NAS when I am away from my home.
In this use case, I wake up the nas with wakeonlan and I turn it of at the end of the session.
With this problem, there is no way to wake it up as it don't shutdown totally.
It's a feature of the NAS, we are free to use it but it has to be fully fonctional.
I don't think the beta and the future release will solve the problem.
The update to 6.4.0 didn't take in count a partiular script or configuration of my device. With no understanding of the problem I'm curious to know how they will fix it.
By the way, the biggest problem of this nas is the lack of a console port to debug it when they are such problems.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
I'll try it - if it helps, that would be perfect, because I do not need the disk-spin-down feature.
Thanks bhaal!

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
As mentioned earlier, with a blank harddisk and a factory reset, worked very well with the exact same configuration and applications (without the used one connected).
Then i removed it and connected my old one the issue was still there. I'm not a tech savvy, but i assume.
BTW, issue is unresolved as i type. changing MTU back to 1500 didnt solve it. Never enabled disk spin-down.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
o.k. I checked with my RN102 what bhaal suggested, but it didn't work.
So disable disk-spin-down does _not_ help. No proper shutdown of the RN102 with 6.4.0. The RN102 hangs _every_ time at shutdown and the only solution is to unplug it from power, while some LEDs of the NAS are still on. Which in my opinion is no good at all, esp. on the long run.
I think a proper shutdown via time table is a key feature of the NAS and should work just smoothly. 😞
And it is no solution to wipe my hard-disks and set up the NAS from scratch, just because of an firmware update (which is no beta and which should be installed because of security reasons).

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
Hi JennC,
I did what you suggested and contacted Netgear Support via Chat. What I found out (in my case) is:
- my NAS RN102 didn't properly shutdown, because of "ATA Error Count" of one of my HDs
- this shutdown problem didn't occur before updating to 6.4.0 (but the errors may have been there before)
So, for all of you with shutdown problems, please check your logs. What I learned is, that in the logs of the webinterface (Admin Page) _these_ errors are not listed. These errors do _not_ trigger a S.M.A.R.T. disk failure or anything like this - so you couldn't see them in the normal logs.
You have to "download" all the logs of your NAS "Admin Page -> Logs" and then open the "disk_info.log"
if there are any "ATA Errors" change this HD - and in my case everything is fine afterwards.
I hope this helps some of you - and thanks to NETGEAR Support for their help.

And dont forget to backup your data 😉

Increasing ATA error counts are logged in 4.x.x firmware, and do generate email alerts. If that is not done with OS6, then in my opinion it is a bug.
FWIW, ATA errors aren't always caused by a faulty drive (but in most cases they are).

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
Please let me know your case number so I can review it.
We do send email alerts about the ATA error count increasing. It's one of the key SMART stats that we track. The history of changes to counts such as the ATA error count are in smart_history.log
An increasing ATA error count is an indication that a disk may be failing.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
o.k. I see.
My case
Case # 26030582
I assumed, that these alerts will show up in the normal logs. I didn't set up an alert contact, because I viewed the logs of the NAS regularly. In my smart_history.log the increase of ata_erros is logged. Good to know, so I should set up the email notification
If you still need it, I could post my smart_history.log

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
Sorry, I have to come back on the issue, but yesterday my RN102 didn't shutdown again.
This time, there were no ATA-Errors.
To me it seems the problem still exists with 6.4.0 firmware ...

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
There is a shutdown fix in the changelog for 6.4.1-T35 for RN100. It might be worth a try.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade
but should I install RN100 firmware on an RN102? And I couldn't find the firmware update, not on the website and there is no regular update via the admin page of my NAS. Could you show me, where I can find this?
Thanks a lot.

RN100 is the whole family, which includes RN102.
Beta release are in the forum, and are manually installed - they won't show up in the firmware update. You'll find OS 6 betas here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta-Release/bd-p/readynas-beta-releases?topic-zoom=Public...
The first post is the 6.4.1 beta information (fixes, change logs, download links).
It is beta, but T35 has been stable on my RN102. Some folks have found it resolved 6.4.0 issues they were seeing (I'm one of them), but others haven't.
What disk model(s) are you using?

I have also had this same issue with 6.4.0. Unit just hanges flashing. Log's last entry is unit is shutting down. Now 6.4.1 will attemp to shut down, but goes from flashing to unit boot right back on.
