RN314 locking on large backup jobs

I have been trying to backup one of the shares on my RN314 for the past 2 weeks and the box gets compleatly locked up when ever I try.

OS verson: 6.4.1

Drive setup: (4) 1Tb Drives (Raid 5)

Share setup: Protocals (SMB & RSYNC) Size (1.1Tb)

Other backups to and from the divice via Rsync and Windows time stamp methods work just fine.

I have also tried to pull data from this share to another destination useing windows to copy & useing microsoft Synctoy. All methods cause the box to lockup.  I am unable to access the admin portal or any share on the divice via network sharing.

This started to happen after OS 6.4.0 and continued with OS 6.4.1

Please Help...

You might want to open a chat/email support case on this.  If you do, please post the case number on this thread (and link the case to this forum post).

There are some other users reporting lockups during backup with 6.4.1.

Re: RN314 locking on large backup jobs

Same issue here - updated to 6.4.1 last week Thursday and the backups have been a nightmare. The RN314 hard locks, nothing relevant is reported in the log files and the unit must be power cycled to restore connectivity. Is there an internal KB to refer to when calling in? I'm most unhappy as I'm just past the standard support warranty and will have to pay for support, 6.4.0/6.4.1 really messed everything up.

I suggest asking for free support, since the Netgear firmware upgrade is what caused your problem.  That's be worth a try anyway.

But chat/email support likely are still free for the RN314.  When did you purchase?

I'm on hold for support now - purchased Nov. 2013, chat/email option wasn't available... I'll definitely see if they'll assist for free.

Hello ITguru1,

You should be able to get support from the support team, you are entitled to get at least 1 free support when the support warranty of the product already expired.

Regards,

Re: RN314 locking on large backup jobs

Back to the issue insted of talking about the lack on support from Netgear.

I have opened a support case for my issue.  so far they have not provided any solutions that help.

I have disabled all scheduled backups, I have disabled the antivirus software on the RN314, and I have re-booted the RN314 a few diffrent times to see if one of the backup jobs are still hanging in the background.

Thanks for the reply - not so, I'm being charged a $75 incident fee... amazing!

OUCH... thanks for reply, this is NOT what I wanted to hear, but really appreciate you posting back - this is insane.

Update:  The engineer I spoke too didn't have a solution at this point, but said based on the logs it appears to be the NAS going into Kernel Panic while performing the backup. He suggested I try a different USB port with the same USB drive and if it happens again, try a different USB drive - so more testing... and then upload the logs for further review. Also, the engineer doesn't believe this is related to 6.4.0/6.4.1, but I've been running the same configuration for two years without a hiccup until the most recent firmware(s) was installed. Coincidence?

Re: RN314 locking on large backup jobs

Okay, so far my issue looks like in only involves backup jobs that are copying data from the RN314 to a share on a windows computer.  This back up is useing the windows time stamp method of copying files.  It is painfully slow.  on the windows PC I could see files getting copied one at a time at a rate of 200Kbps to 400Kbps.  This share is over 1.2 Tb and it would take forever to copy at this rate.

I have since disabled that backup job for now and I am running my Rsync backups that start at one of my windows servers and stores the data on the RN314.  These backup jobs run at 12-15MBps.  This is a resoanbly speed for backups between to computers.

Re: RN314 locking on large backup jobs

I generally use robocopy scripts (running on the PC of course) when backing up NAS shares to windows disks.  There are a couple of ways to schedule them.

That might be another approach that might run faster.

Re: RN314 locking on large backup jobs

It looks like disabling the A/V did the trick.  I am about 70% through on a 1.2Tb backup running at about 2Mb/sec.  Ref Case# 26148385

The Netgear A/V software scans all file access reads before they get transfered.  This bogs down the RN314 OS and makes the divice slow and inaccessable. The strange thing is the Rsync backups are not effected by this.  This leads me to beleave that the A/V scanner does not scan file access via Rsync protocall only SMB/CIFS, AFP, NSF or HTTP.

Some feed back from the developers might be helpfull to stream line file access while manageing local and remote backups.
