RN31400 stuck in Booting after 6.4 firmware upgrade

Hi,

Upgraded Firmware via GUI to 6.4.

NAS is now stuck in booting.

Where do I go from here?

Sorry new to Community if this has been covered.

Re: RN31400 stuck in Booting after 6.4 firmware upgrade

Hi,

Thankyou so much for your reply.

Sadly I had worked through this prior to posting :(, I have since read through the documents again.

1 USB does nothing!

Another USB looks like it may do something however the NAS just turns completely off around 40 to 60 sec!

If i read the tech note correctly the usd is picky!! Is there a list of preferred usb venders?

This would help alot.

Note I can telnet to the nas however it requests a username and password that I do not know, then if I did I would not know what to do!

Once again thank you for your prompt reply, however can you asist with USB vender or tftp options

Regards,

Craig

Re: RN31400 stuck in Booting after 6.4 firmware upgrade

Prepare the USB

  1. Find a USB that is greater than 256 MB but no more than 32 GB.
  2. Ensure there is only one partition on the USB.
  3. Pre-format that USB as FAT-32.
  4. Identify the drive letter your USB is assigned after formatting.

Besides these, I advise you to use a USB 2.0 stick. And format this USB stick with the usb recovery tool.

Re: RN31400 stuck in Booting after 6.4 firmware upgrade

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply to this issue.

Still no luck!

I really cant loose the data on the drives so recovery is the only option at this stage.

I have read, re read and tried 4 USBs varying sizes all less than 32G and vendors and USBv2

All USBs configured following USB recovery procedure.

1st USB used

- RN31400 powered off

- Insert USB in front USB slot

- Press Backup button and power NAS

- Welcome banner on LED, Power button LED flashes while still holding Backup button

- After around 15 Sec Power button LED is Solid LED display is showing Booting___

- Release BAckup button, Nothing happens, then LED screen flashs and returns with "Booting____" however power LED starts flashing again.

2nd & 3rd USB used

- RN31400 powered off

- Insert USB in front USB slot

- Press Backup button and power NAS

- Welcome banner on LED, Power button LED flashes while still holding Backup button

- After around 15 Sec Power button LED is Solid LED display is showing Booting___

- Release BAckup button, After a short period NAS shuts down.

4th USB used

- RN31400 powered off

- Insert USB in front USB slot

- Press Backup button and power NAS

- Welcome banner on LED, Power button LED flashes while still holding Backup button

- After around 15 Sec Power button LED is Solid LED display is showing Booting___

- Release Backup button, Nothing happens, Power LED is solid, "Booting___" displays on drive.

left liek that overnight.

I will try and find another USB however, It would really be heplful if Netgear advertised vender USBs that are more likely to work.

I appreciate that I should back up my NAS to another NAS before doing teh upgrade! however with the number of posts with 6.4 upgrade issues it would seem un reasonable to have another NAS systems just for when I want to do an upgrade.

Appreciate any further assisyance.

As I indicated I can go into maintenance mode and telnet to the device, is there any commands I can run via CLI to boot off the USB or use TFTP to upload the image?

It requires a password that I do not know to access any menu/cli.

Once again thank you all for your prompt responses and support.

Re: RN31400 stuck in Booting after 6.4 firmware upgrade

Hi All,

Slight change now with no real reason.

USB recovery appeared to do nothing.

I accessed Boot menu and started an OS reinstall.

Now Ready NAS displays booting . . . checking root FS?

The Blue LED is blinking?

Will leave for a period and hope for some progress!

Thanks All
