RN428 memory test

Hi

I've just got one of these. Running the memory test - how do I know if it has passed or failed??
All my other ReadyNAS's show a pass counter and error counter.

This just goes from 0-100% and then reboots.

It shows 'Mem test x yy%' on the top line - where x is a number that's flashing - is that the test number or the number of errors??

I've had a look in the logs and there is absolutely nothing there I can see.

Thanks

Andy

Netgear seems to think it's self-explanatory Smiley Frustrated

I think if the test had failed it would not have rebooted.

The RN428 has the capability to display the POST of the BIOS via the USB debug port on the back. You can use a terminal emulation program to watch it. Here is a small receipt:

  • Switch your NAS off.
  • Google for the CP210x_Universal_Windows_Driver, download and install it on your PC.
  • Remove the sticker from the debug port and connect it to your PC. An additional COM post should be installed. In doubt use the device manager to check the COM port number.
  • Open a terminal emulator and connect that port (115200, n, 8, 1).
  • Power the NAS on.
  • When the first POST messages appears you can type <ESC> to enter the BIOS.
  • The BIOS shows the amount of memory installed. Maybe it will display error messages, too.

Changing / expanding the system memory is quite simple. You get cheap RAM modules e.g. at the bay. The memory module inside is "4G 1Rx8 DDR4 2133 ECC". This is an unregistered ECC module, but I installed 4 x Micron MTA9ASF51272PZ-2G3B1QG (which seems to be a registered ECC module), and it´s also recognized by the BIOS. So my RN428 runs with 16GB now.

Managed to do this.

Used the drivers from https://www.netgear.com/support/product/M4100-24G-POEPlus%20(GSM7224P).aspx#USB%20Console%20Driver and a micro USB cable (micro end in NAS).

Output below.

Is there a bug?? It appears to only be testing half the memory:

want 32768MB (34359738368 bytes)
got 5962MB (6252433408 bytes), trying mlock ...locked.

There is 12GB (3x4GB) installed.

It does appear the the number on the LCD display is the loop counter (1->12).
