ReadyNAS 102 - loss of network connectivity

Hi Community,
Here's hoping someone can help me.

To start off with background, I am ok with networking and a keen Linux user too - not an expert, but reasonably capable.
Have been using my ReadyNAS 102 since 2015, and it was working fine up until today.  It was at the latest firmware build and I have always run apt to update the OS with no issues ever.
Today it updated and I lost my ssh link to it - the unit no longer responded to ping requests.  I figured a crash, and rebooted it with a constant ping running on my pc.
Router allocates the DHCP address to the unit and it responds to pings, right up until the OS boot from disks - then it stops - I can just about get an ssh prompt, but before I can enter the password - pings stop and I am out.
It's almost as if the firewall has cut me off - removing the ethernet cable and replacing it again, re-applies the DHCP address lease timer, so it's working, just not allowing access.

If I remove the disks, eventually I get the default web page etc, but I really don't want to lose my data, so I am a bit stuck.

I have tried inserting a single disk and attempted the OS reset recovery from the boot mode, but this doesn't work.

I can factory default, of course, and start over, but I need to get my data first.  I tried mounting one of the disks read only, to a linux box using a USB dock - the drive is seen but won't mount - giving an error message.

Can anyone think of anything to solve this issue, or if not - what are the community's experiences with recovering data from healthy disks ?

Any assistance would be really welcome, and thanks in advance for anything you can suggest.

Martin.

How are you trying to mount it and what error message are you getting?

Is btrfs installed on the linux box?

Re: ReadyNAS 102 - loss of network connectivity

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I penned a reply last night and included output from commands, but today, I see it is not here.     Annoying, but must have been my error.

I was using a PI4 which doesn't have btrfs, as far as I can tell, and the process to incorporate seems to be tricky too.
I have an old Dell, I will try that and make sure the support is there.

The disk is detected as /dev/sda and parted -l shows /dev/sda1 as a GPT drive.
I think this is why it will not mount for me.

Mount reports it is unable to mount special device.
In DMESG, there are reports stating:
Magic mismatch

Can't find valid F2FS filesystem in 1th superblock

I will gather the info again, and post it later here.

Can you suggest a good distro to support the btrfs you mentioned, natively?

It is formatted as GPT, but the data partition of course requires btrfs and mdadm.

I haven't needed to install it on linux myself.  But it should be available in both ubuntu and debian.
