ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Hi,
I have a ReadyNAS 104 with four 2TB Drives. My system show degraded and I have started a Disk Test which, I assume, will take between 8-16 hrs to complete.
1. I have 4 drives in but only drives 1 and 4 show up (see below). Is this normal?
2. Can I remove a drive while that is going on or do I have to wait?
Thank you for any help you can provide

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Hi GGlover24,
Welcome to the Community!
No, it is not normal that only two disks are detected.
You can remove the drives while the disk test is in progress. You need to power down the NAS first then remove the drives afterward.
You can also download the NAS system logs then provide it to us so we can check why the disks 2 and 3 are not detected. You can do that by uploading the logs to a file-sharing site then send the download link via PM (private message)

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
I am assuming that I have to order new drives as it may be that at least two of the drives has failed and the other two are dying too.
My question is should I drives matching the same Cache, in this case 64 or can I mix-n-match the Cache size?
Thanks

You can mix-and-match the cache size.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Hi GGlover24
Do you have a backup of your data?
I checked the kernel.logs and it is flooded with errors from disks 2 and 3.
It will be best if you connect those disks to a PC then run a diagnostic test using the disk manufacturer's tool, then replace the disks that come out bad. Factory reset the NAS then restore from backups.
If the issue still re-occurs, the issue might be on the chassis already.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Thank you for helping me out, I appreicate it.
Can I just replace those two drives, 2 and 3 or are all the drives bad?

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Hi GGlover24,
Based on the logs, only disks 2 and 3 are having errors. There are no reports of any errors on disks 1 and 4.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Hi,
The drive still shows as degraded.
What I've done so far is:
- I've back up the drive.
- I've ordered two new HD; which will be in tomorrow, hopefully. Gotta love Amazon.
Once I have them I will replace drives 2 and 3 and see if that fixes the problem.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test
Hi,
Okay, So I got the new drives in and only one of them was recognized, #3. #2 still shows as blank on the webportal, but the number shows up on the drive.
FYI: The NAS drive no longer show 'degraded' but 'healthy' now.
I am assuming that the bay 2 is damaged some how.
Any advice?
Thanks

Try powering down and removing all disks (labeling by slot). Then put the unused new disk into slot 1, and power up the NAS. If that installs ok, power down and move the disk to slot 2 and boot up again.
That will let you know if the slot is ok or not.
