ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

We have a ReadyNAS 314 that is connected to our network. The PC's on our network are able to search and connect to the NAS fairly quickly, but the Mac Minis (OS 10.12.4 - Sierra) are having a lot of trouble loading files into a finder window from the NAS. It takes a very long time for finder windows to populate from the NAS. Upwards of 10-15 minutes sometimes. Any advice on how we might be able to correct this issue would be greatly appreciated. We are connecting through SMB on the Mac computers (but we've also tested it with AFP, but a change isn't noticed). Thanks so much.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

Checking for updates didn't do anything for me. So I had to download and then upload myself. At first got an error message then the upload worked. Was able to move up to 6.8 and get the new SMB options. Applied the Enhance MacOS and now we're testing to see if it will make a difference. I appreciate all of the support from everyone. Thank god for this community. Have a great weekend everyone.

A backend change can be made to help with this. I've sent you a PM.

Just made the backend settings change and restarted the SMB service.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

Thanks a bunch for doing that. It seems to work faster at first, but then it slows right back down. I'm not sure what's going on. 😞 Maybe its something about how we have our network hooked up. I do appreciate your help, though.

Additionally, now it seems the PC's on our network are struggling to connect to the NAS. THey connect but now it is really slow.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

Was this issue ever resolved? I am using 6.6.1 and in the past few months accessing just a directory on the NAS can take 30 or 40 seconds. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. I'm using SMB to connect, but when I use AFP it's about the same.

KristenM13 can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

Blues11 there is a backend settings change we can try which should help with SMB.

Can I try this backend fix?  my SMB is half the speed of AFP

I have not yet upgraded to 6.7. I'm still on 6.6.1. Is this backend code included in 6.7?

Thanks.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

I know this post is several months back but we are having a similar problem with slow access to our MAC's with OS Sierra 10.12.6. If anyone can help it would appreciated very much.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

Honestly, Even though they logged into my system and applied a "fix" it didn't speed anything up. This NAS has problems with speed and Macs. We are looking to switch from a Netgear NAS altogether because of how slow it is to connect and populate folders, searching them is a nightmare. What a bummer.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

I kept hoping that a new OS release would fix the problem. But we're on the latest version (6.8.0) and nothing has changed. We (an all OS X environment) too have to wait sometimes as long as a minute to simply open a directory on the NAS. Now looking at other vendors for a  solution.

Did you check the box next to "Enhance MacOS" in the system->settings->services page for SMB?

Hi StephenB,

I followed your sugesstion and I don't see the settings option you are referring to. We have our settings set to AFP which we were told was what was needed for MAC.

Hi KristenM13,

Thanks for replying. If you find another alternative that better suited for MAC; please post. I think we also need to move from Netgear.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

Hi Blues11,

It sounds like your situation is just like ours. Our NAS is devoted just to MAC and our users are constantly having to deal with problems opening folders and loading files. Since the problem seems pretty obvious; I don't know why Netgear hasn't addressed it yet.

OSX systems also support SMB ( see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204445 ), so I suggest enabling that for at least one share for testing.

Then set Enhance MacOS as shown below:

Are you sure you are running the released 6.8.0?

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

When we've tried to do updates nothing happens. I haven't reached out to Netgear because the NAS is out of warranty and they're not too open to offerring tech support out of warranty.

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

We're at a really old version. 5 something. Can we go straight to 6.8? When I clicked on a link it downloaded a Disk Image File. Is this the firmware update file?

Re: ReadyNAS 314 access from Mac extremely slow

With an RN314 you can upgrade directly to 6.8.0.  You should try the "Check for updates" first, as that is simpler.

You can also use the x86_64 link here: https://kb.netgear.com/000045831/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Software-Version-6-8-0 and download the zip. Extract the image file from the zip, and upload the firmware using the manual control on the system->settings page.

If you have any apps installed, it would be prudent to uninstall them, and reinstall when you are done.  Some apps created issues with the newer kernels.

Either way, you should review the known issues in the link above before you upgrade.
