ReadyNAS 516 extra data volume

I have logged into the admin console and noticed an error message stating "Remove inactive volumes to use the disk. #1,2,3,4.

Immediate concern, so i looked at the volumes to find an additional data volume had appeared (data-1).

Our main volume (named data approx 4TB) highlights disks 5 & 6 and data-1 highlights disks 1-4 with approx 22 GB.

Everything appears to be runnign smoothly but i am concerned with the error and additional volume.

Re: ReadyNAS 516 extra data volume

Did you recently update the firmware?  Netgear made some changes around OS 6.7 to more agressively look for "lost" volumes so they can be deleted.  Data-1 can probably just be deleted, but there is some risk.  Another user had a similar issue and deleted the wrong volume, leaving him with nothing.  Can you SSH in and post the results of lsblk?  Or if you decide to just try deleting the phantom volume, make sure your backup is up to date before hand.

Re: ReadyNAS 516 extra data volume

OK, that's an odd one.  You have a 22.4GB partition on each drive in addition to the normal OS, Swap, and data ones.  And it has created a RAID1 volume (md126) from just two of them.  That's clearly your new "data-1", so deleting it should be fine.  But I don't understand why you have the separate 22.4GB partitions on each of the drives.  Did you at one time have another drive type that was actually just slightly smaller?  Is XRAID enabled?

Once you delete that volume, XRAID may expand your data volume by creating another md126, but with all the 22.4GB segments from all drives in RAID5, and then adding that to data.  So don't panic if it tells you it's doing something like that.

Re: ReadyNAS 516 extra data volume

We previously had HDD's and upgraded to SSD's, so technically the sizes are likely to be marginally different. As we have a spare device we will most likely use that wilst we re-build this device from fresh

Thanks for your help.

Re: ReadyNAS 516 extra data volume

OK, that explains the why of the second, tiny partiton on each drive, but not why it only used two of them to create a RAID0 array instead of all of them in RAID5 to add to the other.  A total rebuild probably does give you the cleanest result.
