ReadyNAS Duo V1 Disk Upgrade - What did I do wrong?

Okay, so I have a ReadyNAS Duo V1 setup (X-Raid) with two Seagate ST31500341AS (1.5TB) drives and latest firmware. This configuration has been running flawlessly for a little over four years.

Needing more space I acquired two Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 (2.0TB) drives.

First I backed up the existing data onto a network mounted USB3 1.5TB drive and did a backup of the ReadyNAS configuration. Next I pulled the #2 1.5TB drive from the ReadyNAS while it was running and replaced it with the 2.0TB drive. The ReadyNAS detected the change and posted this to the log....

-- Disk fail event occurred on SATA channel 2. If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead.

-- Disk add event occurred on SATA channel 2.

-- Disk initialization started. The estimated time of completion is 17 hour(s) and 39 minute(s), at which time you will be notified via email.

So 9 hours later, I get..

-- RAID sync finished on volume C. The volume is now fully redundant.

So we are back to normal and the Volumes settings screen reports.....

-- Ch 1 : Seagate ST31500341AS [1393 GB] 1393 GB allocated
-- Ch 2 : Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 [1862 GB] 1862 GB allocated <--- Note the allocated size

So far so good.

Now I repeat the previous procedure with the #1 1.5TB drive and get all the same messages for Channel 1.

Everything is all up and running now with no error messages in the log. But here is the problem. This is the Volume settings screen...

-- Ch 2 : Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 [1862 GB] 1393 GB allocated

*** Notice the total amount of allocated disk space

So after all of this...... what happened to my extra drive space?

Reboot the NAS, wait 5-10 minutes and if expansion hasn't started reboot once more.

What version of RAIDiator are you running?

I am on RAIDiator 4.1.8 [1.00a043]

I will store the old 1.5TB drives until I am comfortable that the new 2.0TB drives are stable.

You can't go back. You hot removed the drives one at a time and replaced them with 2TB drives. Each time the unit resynched, the drive you removed is no longer part of the array. In addition, the current smallest drive in the array is a 2TB, so the smallest drive it will currently accept is a 2TB. The drives you removed can be reformatted on the PC and used for additional backup/archival use. (Archiving is when you move data from the NAS to an off line storage. This would be for data that you may want to keep but do not need quick access to. Such a older financial files.)

I have several older drives that were removed and replaced with larger ones. I then installed them in a JBOD box connected to my PC. The JBOD box is off 99% of the time and only if I need to add data to one of the drives or access it do I turn it on. Don't forget to do a separate backup if you archive data.

I realize that I could not just plug in the old drives if the new drives were flakey. I do have a full backup though and could just put the old drives back in and restore the backup and start again.

That will work. Maintaining a current and complete backup will always provide one a Plan B and also give more options in case of problems.
