ReadyNAS Duo v2 Flashing Backup LED

Hi,

I am having a problem with one of my ReadyNAS Duo v2 units. Firmware version is 5.3.11.

I powered down via the Dashboard web interface.

When I powered back up about 10minutes later the problem started.

• The power LED is on
• The backup LED is flashing rapidly
• Raidar cannot see it
• It does not show on my network
• It will not power down using the power button, I have to disconnect the power

I have tried to access the boot menu by pressing the reset button while reconnecting the power, but all that happens is that I get the same power LED=on, backup LED=flashing.

Can anyone help with this?

You cannot just put the disks into the 102, they will be wiped.

Your best option if you have another duo v2 is to use that chassis to access the data and copy it to the new 102 when it is set up.  Make sure the firmware on the working duo v2 is up to date first.

Dont mix the disks up and label them ( the ones from the broken duo and those in the working duo) according to slot number.

Is the duo still covered by warranty (3 years for the original purchaser).  If so, contact support.  This sounds like hardware to me.

You might also use RAIDar and see if it gives any more status.

Hardware warranty expired on the 20th April this year.

Raidar cannot see the ReadyNAS

The green LED on the LAN connection is on with occasional blinking.

Are you absolutely certain that when you push the reset button the switch is engaged? 

It is certainly an ominous sign if you cannot access the boot menu.

You could perhaps check that the memory is seated properly and try again.

What happens when the unit is booted with no disks, and also with another spare disk that you know is good?

I'd try these tests first (at least the no-disk boot).

Sorry for the delay, been away from PC.

The same thing happens with no discs.

I haven't a spare disk that is on compatibily list, but I do have a WD 500GB Green drive (WD5000AAVS).

IF RAIDar doesn't see the NAS when you power it up w/o disks, then I think the chassis has failed.

How do I get access to do that?

You would need to open the chassis.  I don't have a duo and I'm not sure you'll find an instruction manual for this. 

I think StephenB is right though and you need to consider how much effort you are prepared to go to.

In between mine and your post, I found my way inside.

It is; Side panels off, then rear panel off to gain access to the mainboard. However, there are no socketed chips on the main board.

While I was inside, (clutching at straws), I changed the backup battery on the off chance. It made no difference. (wasn't really expecting it to).

I have ordered a second RN102 diskless and two disks, hopefully they will be delivered tomorrow. Is there anyway to migrate the disks from the Duo into the RN102 without data loss? So that I can then upgrade capacity with the new disks.

I do also have another Duo v2 and an RN102.

I thought that might be the way.

So if I do that, I assume there won't be a problem putting the second Duo v2's original disks back afterwards?

That should be fine. Best to have a backup first though as when you handle disks bare you can damage them without realising it through electro-static discharge.

When I swap the disks over on the Duo v2, I do it with it shutdown.

Absolutely.
The nas must always be off when performing a
migration from one device to another similar device. The firmware on the new device must also already have been updated to at least the version that is present on the disks that are going in.

The simplest approach for data migration is to temporarily put your old disks in your other duo v2, and transfer the data to the new NAS over the network.

New RN102 is Up and running.

Disks from failed Duo v2 migrated to second Duo v2 and copied over to RN102.

My ReadyNAS system was comprised of one RN102 and two Duo v2's

The RN102 being the primary, this was backed up to the two duo v2's (as they were lower capacity, some shares were backed on Duo v2 and some to the other.

My system is now comprised of two x RN102 (primary and secondary), and the remaining Duo v2

So the backup regime will continue to split between the secondary RN102 and the Duo v2.

My PC and Laptop are backup using Macriuum Reflect to separate folders in the backup share on the primaary RN102.

The disks from the failed Duo v2 are now spare, I have a USB 3.0 dock so I shall try a backup via the USB socket on the reer of the RN102.
