ReadyNAS NV+ - Adding a new drive to X-RAID?

So I recently had this ReadyNAS NV+ donated to me with two dead drives in it. I've never worked with one before, but it was working just fine with two drives so I figured it would be easy enough to pop out the two that weren't working and replace them. I should have done more research, so I'm sure I messed things up but I'm not sure where.

The drives that weren't working were in slots 1 and 4, so I pulled out the drive in slot 1 and replaced it, then rebooted. So far so good. Then I did the same with the one in slot 4 and that's when things got a little strange. When I rebooted, I got a kernel panic message on the front window. I pulled out the drive from slot 4 and rebooted again, and then for some reason it looked like drive 1 and 2 were fine but drive 3 had some kind of issue as it was listed as UNKNOWN on the raid config page with a flashing yellow light. I put the drive back into slot 4 and rebooted again, this time having it do a volume check on reboot. It came up with no kernel panic this time but now my RAID config page looks like this:

My questions are:

1) What did I do wrong to avoid doing it in the future?
2) How do I get these four drives all together on the RAID without losing the information that is, as of now, still accessible and complete?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or insight you can give!

I suggest backing up the existing data, and doing a factory default procedure. This will get you to a totally clean slate. Then restore whatever data is of interest from the backup.
