ReadyNAS NV+ Increase Capacity
Hello,
I think this has been addressed in the FAQ, but I'm unsure if it'll work on older devices.
I've got the NV+ that I just updated the firmware to 4.1.9. I'm running out of disk space and I need to increase capacity. Is it really as simple as hot swapping disks one at a time, letting the NAS do it's magic before going on to the next drive, with a reboot of the NAS when the last disk is complete for the device to recognize the increased capacity?
I always get nervous when things seem too simple.
Thanks in advance.
P.S.
I've already consulted the compatibility list and have the drives in my shopping basket at Amazon.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ Increase Capacity
It is that simple, provided you don't encounter a dual drive failure during the process. The pulling of one drive is treated by the NAS as a drive failure, so if during the resync process, another drive is weak but has not triggered an alert, fails, you have problems.
This is why we recommend that you create/update your backup so you have all of your critical/important information (financial info, home movies, family photos, etc.) backed up. If you are using the NV+ to backup your PC's and the data is on other devices, then you have a suitable backup source for the data.
The resync process puts a lot of strain on the drives since they run constantly and you will be doing this for four periods of 6-8 hours each time. Note that it may also take a reboot or two once it has resynced the last drive to trigger the expansion.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ Increase Capacity
Do remember that your NV+ is a v1 so be sure to use the list for the NV+ (v1) not the one for the NV+ v2.

Don't forget that you'll need to factory default if you're installing large drives with 4k sectors.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ Increase Capacity
Well, my hard drives arrived today and the first one is in.
But, things are never easy, the disk tray eject button no longer works on any of my four drives, so I had to use the solution in the link below. Thank goodness for the YouTube video to show how to do it.

Go to the 4th entry for the YouTube link.
So no my ReadyNAS is busy rewriting the first disk. According to the e-mail, it'll take 8 hours and 49 minutes to complete, so it'll be done around 2:00 am my time.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ Increase Capacity
Well, all four 1TB drives are installed and the RAID successfully expanded (that phase took 16 hours). I now have 2.7 TB of drive storage and of that 1.4 TB is free space. Had a little hiccup with the third disk swap, the NAS just froze. But it finished after I unplugged it and restarted it with no data loss.
