ReadyNAS NV upgrade to ReadyNAS NV+

My ReadyNAS NV power supply has failed (3rd time). I just ordered a newer ReadyNAS NV+. ReadyNAS support told me I will be able to take the drives out of the older NV box and put them in the NV+ box. I was told I need to keep the same order (drive 1 to drive 1, etc.). I was also told I would need to run through some steps but then I would be back up and running. Finally I was told there is documentation that explains how to do this. I cannot find the documentation. Can anyone point me to where I can find instructions how to do this?

Thanks you for your help and have a great day!

Yes you can do this: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another

The NV and NV+ are practically the same (have same CPU and memory). See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/pre-sales/what_is_the_difference_between_the_readynas_nv_and_nv

What version of RAIDiator were you running on the NV?

Re: ReadyNAS NV upgrade to ReadyNAS NV+

I do not know what version of RAIDiator I was running. I bought the ReadyNAS in 2008 and would not have upgraded it. The new one should arrive today and I'll start work on this as soon as I get home from work. Thank you for the reply.

Re: ReadyNAS NV upgrade to ReadyNAS NV+

Ah, well you'd be running very old firmware then. The new unit will most likely come with much newer firmware. I'd suggest you update the firmware as suggested in the migration link provided above to ensure the firmware on the flash matches what's on the disks. There have been lots of bug fixes, new features and other enhancements since you purchased your NV.

Also, hopefully your new NAS will have come with trays with circular buttons on the trays. These trays are known to get stuck sometimes. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/how_can_i_release_a_stuck_disk_tray

Hopefully the new NV+ comes with trays with rectangular buttons. These trays don't get stuck. If the new unit has disk trays with rectangular buttons you'll probably want to use the new trays and perhaps keep the old ones as spares or try to sell them to get a bit of money back towards your new unit.

Re: ReadyNAS NV upgrade to ReadyNAS NV+

Dear mdgm,

I made the transition yesterday. I had problems with the disk tray but the article solved it. My biggest problem was removing the 4 screws. It was a killer. I ended up putting on a rubbler glove used for gardening to protect my hand and get traction to undo the screws. 🙂

I also updated the firmware with no problem once I got to the nasdrive. The Raidar tool is hit and miss finding the resource. However, i can get there directly with ipaddress/admin.

I want to thank you for answering my questions. I really appreciate it.

I have onl one other issue and that is with mapping the drive. I'll start a new post for that.

Again, thank you very much for your help.

Re: ReadyNAS NV upgrade to ReadyNAS NV+

Are you using the latest RAIDar (currently 4.3.2: http://www.readynas.com/downloads)?
