ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

We have a ReadyNas NV+ v1 with Firmware 4.1.14 which is used as a backup for a ReadyNas NV+ v2. On Monday, I started having problems accessing the unit, so I did the usual thing & re-started it. When it came back up, it was no better.

Reading various forums, I wondered if one of the disks was causing issues, so replaced disk 1 & re-synced. But, it was no different.

So, I tried an OS re-install. Once this had completed, I was getting a browser display very similar to /t5/image/serverpage/image-id/1699i9E7E85271195937F?v=1.0

OK - I assumed something didn't work right, so did the OS re-install again. But this time, I can't access the unit in the browser at all. I have tried multiple browsers - both latest versions & older versions, from various PC's using various versions of Windows (from 2003 to 10).

When I try to view the unit shares in Windows Explorer, I'm promted for a username/password - I have tried the password I had set, and the default admin password, but nothing gives access. RAIDar shows the unit with a Healthy status & I can Ping the IP address.

I obviously lost SSH access with the OS re-install, so I tried the Tech support mode & used Telnet to check the log files (as suggested on this forum) - there was only a small enclosure.log, which I have now deleted. But this hasn't made any difference.

Does anyone have any advice please?

Thank you very much for the very useful information StephenB.

I cleared logs & cache, re-installed the OS & I have access again!

What a relief... thank you so much for helping.

The default admin password on the NV+ is netgear1 (not the same as your v2 NAS).

You might look for a full OS partition while you are in tech support mode (you'll need to mount the OS partition to check it).

If the v1 simply backs up the v2, perhaps just do a factory reset, rebuild it, and reload the data from scratch.

Thanks for the reply StephenB

"The default admin password on the NV+ is netgear1 (not the same as your v2 NAS)."

I am aware of the difference & have been using the correct password.

"You might look for a full OS partition while you are in tech support mode (you'll need to mount the OS partition to check it)."

What would I be looking for? Why would this help?

"If the v1 simply backs up the v2, perhaps just do a factory reset, rebuild it, and reload the data from scratch."

I was simplifying... it does, but it holds daily/weekly/monthly versions which I'm trying not to lose.

The OS partition is only 2 GB in the NV+ v1.  If it gets full, then there are several possible symptoms, including loss of connection.

The fact that the OS reinstalls made the problem worse suggests that it might be getting full.  There are a couple ways that can happen, the most common is a run-away log file.

You can check it simply enough with df - but you do need to mount it first.  Are you using XRAID or flexraid?

I'm afraid I don't know if I'm using XRAID or flexraid - my guess would be whatever is the default. It's inherited hardware so I didn't set it up originally, but I know the guy that did the 1st setup & it't unlikey he will have changed from the default.

The default is XRAID.

I'll send you a PM ("private message") - there's a messages link the the upper right of the forum pages.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

Sorry for re-actvating an old thread... but the NAS, even after clearing cache & logs still has the /dev/hdc1 99% full. Any idea how I can empty this (without a factory reset)?

Thanks

The first step is to identify where the space is going.

Do I need to be in tech support mode for this?

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

You need shell access to the NAS.  If normal SSH won't work, then you'll need tech support mode/telnet.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

Thanks for your help with this StephenB

Here's a list of the folders on the box:

/bin    2.7Mb
/c    4.1T    seems to contain LastMonth, LastSaturday, LastWorkingDay & LiveServers folders!
/dev    128kb
/etc    15Mb
/frontview    17Mb
/home    32kb
/initrd    1kb
/lib    36Mb
/lost+found    16kb
/opt    5.9Mb
/proc    2.6Mb
/ramfs    48kb
/root    256kb
/sbin    3.2Mb
/sys    0
/tmp    32kb
/USB    0
/usr    168Mb
/var    38Mb

/backup_scripts    5.1Gb    this is my scripts & logs
/LastMonth    0    my share folder (I thought)
/LastSaturday    0    my share folder (I thought)
/LastWorkingDay    0    my share folder (I thought)
/LiveServers    0    my share folder (I thought)

All got using "du -hcs /[folder]".

I'm now more confused...

These are in the OS partition?  They shouldn't be.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

When I SSH in, do "cd /", then "ls", I see these folders...

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

Try an ls -al

If you see something like /backup_scripts -> /c/backup_scripts at the end, then the folder is actually on your data (c) volume.  You can ignore those.

Another way to see mount points (which are really on the data volume) is to enter mount with no arguments.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

Thanks Stephen

These folder ARE in the data (c) volume.

The size of the rest of the folders are
/bin    2.7Mb
/c    4.6T
/dev    128kb
/etc    15Mb
/frontview    17Mb
/home    32kb
/initrd    1kb
/lib    36Mb
/lost+found    16kb
/opt    5.9Mb
/proc    2.6Mb
/ramfs    48kb
/root    256kb
/sbin    3.2Mb
/sys    0
/tmp    32kb
/USB    0
/usr    168Mb
/var    44Mb

Does this help?

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 - can't access but ping shows reply

Well, none of these are filling the OS partition.  Everything totals to a couple hundred megabytes, not nearly 2 gigabytes.
