ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition [X-RAID2] - The paths for the shares listed below could not be found.

I hot swapped a disc in a 6 disc ReadyNAS, the resyncing got stuck at 38.2% with ReadyNAS not responding, I had to reboot and then got this error message. No backups available (kind of defies the purpose of redundancy + already replaced all original 6 failed discs with no problems until now), so fixing it is important. Thank you

Backups of raid systems are required because redundancy does not protect against all causes of data loss.

Were you using single or dual redundancy?

What firmware is running?

What make/model disks are in the nas?

Had the disk that you replaced failed completely or was it still functional?

Had you received any messages about errors on any other disks?

It is possible you have had another disk failure during the resync.

Strategies to try to retrieve data in these situations involve trying to identify if and which other disk has failed, cloning it at then trying to reconstruct the array with the clone.  There are other possibilities though.

You could start by powering down and testing all the disks with vendor tools.  Label disks according to slot number and doesn't remove or reinsert disks unless the unit is off.

Netgear ar support may be able to offer data retrieval service for a fee so it is probably worth contacting them.  Apart from testing the disks, I wouldn't advise doing anything else which may compromise attempts at data retrieval.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition [X-RAID2] - The paths for the shares listed below could not be foun

Thank you, vandermerwe, I am not too tech savvy, but I will try to provide the answers to the questions in your post:

- single or dual redundancy: not sure, only 1 extra disc was used, so I suppose it means single?

- firmware: the last available RAIDiator 4.2.27

- the make/model of discs in the NAS: originally 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000340NS, prior to this mishap 4 were successfully replaced with WD20EZRX, the 5th failed Seagate was successfully replaced with WD30EZRX, fully synced and volume expanded, then I have decided to replace the last Barracuda with another WD30EZRX with the unfortunate result described above. No errors were reported for the last Seagate disc prior to replacement (I guess I should have listened to not broken, do not fix thing). No errors were (ever) reported on WD discs.

I have contacted the Netgear support and yes, they would diagnose for a fee, but there is no guarantee they could fix this. I read the forum threads suggesting using r-sync in Linux and logged into the NAS from a PC booted in Ubuntu, I could see the NAS shares, but cannot open a single one of them. Not sure what to do next.

There are photos on NAS that I do not want to loose, for the rest I really just need a list of what is there and then I could try a factory reset which I hope would work as the NAS seems to be booting as before, but just no volume detected((

No one will guarantee a full recovery.  Some services might only charge if they are successful, but of course that means (all things equal) that they need to charge more if they are successful.

My suggestion:  Come up with a dollar figure on what you are willing to spend on a recovery attempt.  Then contact Netgear, and make sure the support engineer assigned knows what that figure is.  Also ask him/her to focus on the share with the the photos first.

Thank you, StephenB, is there another solution? The more forums I read, the more negative reviews (warranted or unwarranted) I get for the Netgear tech support's help (or lack thereof) in similar cases. I would rather try something on my end, possibly with someone's help, if there are other options in getting the volume fixed or retrieving selected data out of the RAID.

I don't know what you are reading specifically, but my own experiences with Netgear support have been excellent.  Data Recovery is done by specialists, so it is different from the level 1 support you might get.

There are other recovery services you could use - but I have never used one (including Netgear's), and don't have one to recommend.  Seagate offers a recovery service, and a recent poster here used it successfully (http://www.seagate.com/services-software/seagate-recovery-services/) .  Western Digital lists their data recovery partners here: http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?lang=en

There are some scammers out there, so I do think you want to be careful who you choose.  And you still should have a dollar amount in mind no matter who you chose.

I would also suggest getting the initial diagnostics data recovery contract if you need a data recovery attempt.

Data recovery attempts are done by Level 3 support.

OK, thank you StephenB and mdgm, appreciate your suggestions, I will try the support route.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition [X-RAID2] - The paths for the shares listed below could not be foun

Hello everybody, a few weeks later and a few leading nowhere (at least for now) back-and-forth attempts with various levels of Netgear tech support (including, a week of tech mode for my NAS and paid contracts)) I am faced with the following. All my disks seem working, no SMART errors, but the volume is still not found, as before. I hooked them all up individually to a r-studio-loaded Windows machine and would like to try to create a virtual RAID and try to recover jpg files there. One useful thing the tech support sent me was, what I believe to be, the RAID parameters, but I am not sure where all of them (for instance Super offset) should go to in r-studio to increase my chances of recovery. I did recover data from a failed disk using r-studio a couple of years ago and am hopeful that I would have enough general ability ))) to try this time as well. I would greatly appreciate either a good link explaining how to read RAID parameters (I did study the r-studio manual, but got lost there) or any other help. Just in case I am including a portion of what I was sent by the diagnostitian:

Re: ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition [X-RAID2] - The paths for the shares listed below could not be foun

UPDATE

I have just heard from Netgear tech support that since the volume expansion was interrupted at an unknown point, the volume cannot be rebuilt. As a result, Netgear cannot help getting access to my data - verbatim.

In the meantime, I had no success with finding RAID parameters either via ReclaiMe RAID recovery (stopped at some point with a message that it could not find a RAID5) or via an automatic scanning in r-studio. Since the sync was not properly finished, I did not have redundancy and perhaps the parameters needed are different. Perhaps they are in the tech support message I reproduced above)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
