ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer getting power but blue power button not working

I have an old ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer that has been working perfectly. We had a power outage last night and the unit was on UPS power for about 10 minutes. While on UPS power, I powered the ReadyNAS down safely using the blue power button (press and hold and then press again). I then flipped the switch on the back of the unit OFF as an extra precaution and went to bed.

 

This morning I am trying to power it back up but am having problems. After flipping the switch on the back to the ON position, I can see that the unit is getting power successfully as the ethernet port has a healthy green light. But the blue power button on the front does not light up at all and pressing it gets no response. This has never happened before. I have checked the forum postings but have found no clear answer. I tried calling techincal support but was directed to an online link that doesn't exist and then disconnected.

 

I'll be extremely grateful for any help or suggestions.

Well I am happy to report that I was able to get the power supply switched out successfully. I put all the disks back in and everything came up fine and is back to normal with no problems at all. If anyone is reading this and looking for the parts, I found them here:

Try disconnecting the power, removing the disks (labeling them by slot number), and then power it up diskless.  Then see if it boots with a no-disk status.  If if does, then also see if RAIDar detects it.

 

You might have a coincidental PSU failure (it's not that uncommon for them to fail when being powered up).

Ok, I tried it. I disconnected the power and removed the disks. Then reconnected the power and tried to power it up, and unfortunately there was no change. The ethernet port still gives a green solid light, but the blue power button on the front does not light up and does not respond.

 

If it was a power supply failure, does it make sense that the ethernet port light is lighting up?

I have been looking into replacing the power supply and found this posting. Amazon has the Seasonic SS-300SFD 300W the poster recommends.

Would you recommend going this route? It's probably too much to hope for, but is it possible there is just some sort of reset needed? It was working beautifully until I powered it down last night. Replacing the chassis looks to be quite expensive.

So I pulled out the power supply and did the paperclip test and it is indeed dead. I guess I will be following that other post to try and replace it with the Seasonic.

While you have confirmed, yes, it makes sense.  The ethernet port is powered by 5VSB (5V standby) power so it can respond to WoL.  It sounds like one or more of the main voltages on your supply is dead.

 

You'll also need a 6" extender for the 24-pin ATX connector with the Seasonic, as the Netgear one has a non-standard length.  Just to make things cleaner, you may also want to move the 90° MOLEX 4-pin connectors from the old the the new and trim those wires.

Sandshark, thanks for your explanation about the ethernet port. That was really bothering me because I didn't understand it. That helps a lot, so thanks for that. I'm really hoping it's just the power supply that's bad and the motherboard is still okay. Do you happen to know whether motherboard problems are common with these ReadyNAS units?

 

I did see the recommendation for the ATX power cable extender and I ordered that too, I ordered an 8" one though because I copied the purchases made by another poster. Hopefully it will fit all right.

 

And regarding the wire trimming for the MOLEX connectors ... that's the thing that I'm most concerned about. I've built several computers from components in the past, but I've never had to make cable modifications, so this part will be new to me. I hope once I get the new power supply in hand it will be clear what I need to do. But if anyone knows of a link to instructions I could follow, I'd be very grateful to know about it. (Or if some kind soul wouldn't mind writing a few sentences to explain the process to a newbie.)

The 8" extension will work fine.  I got the same one for the first one I did.  You just have to find room for the extra cable.

 

The 90° MOLEX are the type you just push the wire into with a small screwdriver.  (There's actually a proper tool, but a screwdriver works fine for just a few).  And the wires are color coded.  You'll see once you get it apart.

 

You can, if you have one, just connect a standard ATX supply up externally to see that it's just the supply.

Cool. Thanks for the tips. I should receive the power supply early next week and I'm looking forward to working on it. I am eager to get this fixed as the NAS is my interface to cloud backups, so I'm doing local-only backups for now while it's out of commission.

Hmm. I got mine from  a third-party seller called "Thousands of Electronics". It looks like that seller still has at least one for sale:

It is listed as "used" but the one I received was as good as new and had no signs of use. And yeah they are definitely out of stock at New Egg.

I've suggested the SST-ST45SF elsewhere on the forum, but have not seen where someone has used it.  The higher rating of 450W vs. 300W bumps the 12V rail up to the Seasonic rating, and there is also a higher rating on the +5VSB, which I know has been the problem for some.  Only $10 more than the SST-ST30SF.  But neither have the 3 4-pin MOLEX connectors.  The NAS might work fine with just 2 (I know it has just for recovery operations), but Netgear put on three for a reason.  So a SATA to MOLEX adapter or moving one of the connectors from old to new would be recommended.  I've always moved the old connectors and trimmed the leads, anyway; as it's cleaner.

 

I bought 4 SeaSonics from another dealer on closeout a few years ago and still have two.  Plus, my legacy 6-drive units aren't in my current production environment.  So, I'm not likely to try one any time soon.
