ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain files

Going nuts with this problem.
Media share is theoretically open to all
Have just regone through the suggestions here http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=46027
just to make sure.
So read/write for all, and all with users nobody / nogroup

When i ssh into the nas and look at folders, all true
Here a listing
drwxrwxrwx+ 3 nobody nogroup 4096 2012-09-22 11:53 Art Deco Icons
drwxrwxrwx+ 2 nobody nogroup 4096 2013-01-31 21:49 Big Art S01E01
drwxrwxrwx+ 3 nobody nogroup 4096 2012-09-22 11:53 Big Art S01E02
drwxrwxrwx+ 3 nobody nogroup 4096 2012-09-22 11:53 Big Art S01E03

Problem is with for example Win7 64bit, i can happily browse the first folder Art Deco Icons, but for the other three folders get "is not accessible" / Access is denied

Anyone got an idea what the problem is ?

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

What kind of ReadyNAS Pro is this?

Is it a ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition, ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer, Pro 2, Pro 4 or Pro 6? Looking at your forum join date, I'm guessing probably a Pioneer or a Business Edition.

If it is a Pro Pioneer then like the Ultra 6 Plus the security mode will be set to User mode and you won't see an option to change security mode.

Edit: Ah, I see from searching your posts that you have a Pioneer.

Shares > Security > Security Mode - doesnt exist

Under Shares - there is only Share Listing and Add Shares

...Pioneer Pro

That's because you have the Pioneer. It's a model for the advanced home user. It only has one security mode, User mode, and that can't be changed. The Ultra 6 Plus is the successor to the ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition (same CPU and a model a_burger_with_fries is probably more familiar with). The Ultra vs Pro naming is a bit clearer than Pioneer vs Business Edition.

Go to Share Listing, click on a protocol for a share e.g. CIFS. Then you will see tabs for different protocols that are enabled such as CIFS, AFP etc. and an Advanced tab at the far right.

Have you tried an OS reinstall? then try to release ownership of the share, if it still not allowing you to access.

...er...yeah ...i know, i only mentioned what was there, because thats where the security setting was supposed to be

@a_burger_with_fries

an OS install, seems some what excessive, when everything else is working.
- i assume i then have to recreate all settings / shares etc new then ?

I have upped the samba logging, but get nothing there when trying to access it from windows 7.
Are there any other logs maybe worth looking at ?

- renaming the folder over ssh does not help

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

your admin password will go back to default "netgear1" and as long as it can reach the DHCP server it will just pull an address if not it will be 192.168.168.168

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

ok seem to have to solved this by changing the owner on all files
it was using nobody and nogroup
whereas i've now changed it to a specific user, (left the group as it was)

and it seems to have done the trick

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

I am curious - if you set it back to nobody does the problem come back?

I am suspecting not.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

If you enable ssh access you could see the linux owners and permissions, and compare the inaccessible folder with the rest.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

yes definately, both as user & also as nobody

Here copied from ssh, Tv works fine, the other doesn't at all.
What is the + at the end of the rights ?

drwxrwxrwx+ 19 soup nogroup 4096 2013-02-03 01:31 Tv
drwxrwxrwx 32 soup nogroup 4096 2012-09-20 22:57 _tv_4_kw_cp

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

ok the plus is to do with advanced acl
On the working directory i have the following
# file: media/Tv/
# owner: soup
# group: nogroup
user::rwx
group::rwx
other::rwx
default:user::rwx
default:group::rwx
default:other::rwx

on the non working directory i have
# file: media/_tv_4_kw_cp/
# owner: soup
# group: nogroup
user::rwx
group::rwx
other::rwx

so the obvious question would seem to be - how do i set the default acl's then ?

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

its very very strange, i've looked at the samba/Shares.conf
and my other shares had just this
[music]
path = /c/music
comment = "music only"
oplocks = 1
admin users = "admin","Administrator"
writeable = 1
guest ok = 1

whereas my media share had all this lot
[media]
path = /c/media
comment = "Media Server Share"
oplocks = 1
force create mode = 0666
create mask = 0666
force security mode = 0666
force directory mode = 0777
directory mask = 0777
force directory security mode = 0777
admin users = "admin","Administrator"
writeable = 1
guest ok = 1

i've changed it so that its the same as the music share.
Then i've chown'd back to nobody on the media share, and restarted smb, but i still end up with the same problem as before, some directories are unavailable.
This is driving me nuts

Re: ReadyNAS Pro - windows xp & 7 cannot access certain file

I generally use frontview, and have never edited Shares.conf

I am not certain on this, but it is possible that the NAS firmware will rewrite Shares.conf sometimes (either on restart, or firmware update, etc).

In any event, the media share was created by RAIDiator on the initial install.
