ReadyNAS RN2120v2 OS 6.10.6 freezes

I installed recent OS v6.10.6, made a Factory Reset, made a RAID 10 with the brand new 4xWD Ultrastar DC HC320 8TB and started to copy my files to RN2120v2 using Windows 10 PC. The problem is it sometimes freezes during file copy. Only switch on the back of the unit can bring the NAS back online. After second freeze NAS started resyncing. Antivirus, filesearch, snapshots are turned off. Only SMB and SSH protocols are switched on. Only 1 app is installed - SMB Plus. HDDs SMART shows no errors. What can cause the freezes? I can share the logs taken right after reboot (after second freeze).

This is the root (OS) partition, and it has plenty of free space - so not the issue here.

Despite the healthy SMART stats, this appears to be disk related.  Have you looked in system.log, systemd-journal.log and kernel.log for disk or btrfs errors?

StephenB, thank you for your answer! Here are some excerpts from the mentioned logs just before the manual Reboot.

This is a bit unusual, as normally I'd expect to see gigabit ethernet.  Are you using a fast ethernet switch?

Re: ReadyNAS RN2120v2 OS 6.10.6 freezes

RN2120's LAN1 was connected to a Mobile Router. It's 100Mbps. But LAN2 was connected directly to a Windows PC 1Gbps LAN port. Files were copied over LAN2.

When it freezes, can you reach the NAS over LAN1?  (starting with ping).

Yes, I tried to ping NAS during freeze from both LANs. No luck(

Is the fault LED lit when it freezes?

Also, are you comfortable enabling ssh?

Re: ReadyNAS RN2120v2 OS 6.10.6 freezes

StephenB, sorry for looong delay! I had to find 4 cheap HDDs to experiment with RN2120v2 because I don't want to stress my brand new WD HC320s with hard reboots. I got 4 1TB Seagates and that took some time. Made a new connection using Gigabit Ethernet Switch D-Link DGS-1100-16V2. Made a new RAID. But the problem is still there. RN2120v2 is still freezes during file copy operation. I can clearly say when it freezes it doesn't respond to ping, you can't reach it over SSH, the fault led is turned off, the lan led is lit and blinks when you try to ping RN2120v2. I'm comfortable with SSH but don't know much commands. In case you can write needed commands I'll gladly experiment with my RN2120v2. As far as I can tell it freezes only during file copy operations. HDDs were replaced so I don't think they cause the issue.

What disks did you purchase?  SMR drives can create problems with RAID and BTRFS.  There is a CMR/SMR list here: https://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/cmr-smr-list/

If you have both LANs connected, try connecting only LAN 1, and see if you still have the problem.  If that continues to fail, try the same test using LAN 2.

Not sure where to go next if these tests both fail.  Maybe create 4 jbod volumes using the test disks, and try the test on each volume separately.
