ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (4.2.16) Becomes Unresponsive
Greetings,
I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 6 with 4.2.16 installed that I love. I have 6 WD20EARS drives installed with dual redundancy.
Twice in the last two weeks my ReadyNAS has become entirely unresponsive. I can't ping it, connect via any file sharing method, Raidar, etc. Even when I press the power button for a second the LCD does not light up. I had to press the power button down for until it shutdown and then I turned it back on.
When I check the logs section of the screen it list any reason for the crash. I downloaded all the logs and looked through a couple but I am not really sure what I am looking for.
One time it crashed overnight. The second time I was copying a 20GB file over AFP. I do this regularly and haven't had an issue in the past, so it might be coincidence.
Any ideas of where I should look?

Re: ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (4.2.16) Becomes Unresponsive
Hello,
I think your problem may be due to incompatible drives. The WD20EARS only have one sub-model that is compatible, and only with one specific firmware. Only model # WD20EARS-00S8B1, with firmware 80.00A80, is compatible with the ReadyNAS. If you have any other model of WD20EARS that is most likely your issue. If you do have that model make sure the firmware is correct. If it is and you are still experiencing issues I recommend opening a support case.

Re: ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (4.2.16) Becomes Unresponsive
Readysecure1985 - I suggest you re-read that technical bulletin. It was published before RAIDiator 4.2.12 was released that supported 4K drives. The specified WD20EARS version listed is the old obsolete 3 disc 512K sector drive. It is no longer available. Following the release of the advance format 4K drives by WD (and others) RAIDiator was updated to support those drives with version 4.2.12 on the x86 models and 4.1.7 on the sparc based models.
Member is running 4.2.16 which not only support 4K sector Advanced Format drives, but also drives over 2T which use GPT partitioning rather than MBR.
Shockalot - I agree with readysecure1985 in that you should open a technical support case online. Once you have the case number, append it to the subject line in your first post. While waiting for them, I would also make sure you have a current and complete backup. Always a good idea any time.

Re: ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (4.2.16) Becomes Unresponsive
Did you ever get this sorted??? I've always had this from the day I purchased this piece of junk and it's still happening to me 2+ years on!!! Got the latest patches and the machine came with 6GB pre-installed from Netgear so surely they would have provided the appropriate drives with it.
As for the backup, I agree but what? Do I need another readynas to backup my current readynas??? What a joke to be honest! I don't have the money to buy another drive and that's a major concern as this thing is happening to be at least one or twice a week where I have to force a reboot by keeping the power button pressed for 3 seconds or so!! So mad at netgear that they get away release products like this!! Totally unacceptable!
Any update would be great!
Thanks.
T.

tfierens - please don't reopen a long dead thread. Start a new one. Also I suggest a support request at support.netgear.com.
