ReadyNAS and plex server

Hi,

I've had a ReadyNAS for a few years now, using 3 hard dives transferring all my cd's and dvd's on top of all my computer backups. I was using DNLA to stream to my TV, but prefer Plex which I use by keeping my laptop constantly on... not too good. Plex can't go on sparc processor so I would need to buy another ReadyNAS machine. Is there a recommended one I could use? Not too expensive and that would be compatible to just transfer my hard drives or of I have no choice and can't just transfer my hd's (they will be reformatted)?

The NV+ (v1 - silver chassis - runs RAIDiator 4.1.x or earlier) does not support Plex. The RAID format is different so you can't migrate your disks across. Your disks would need to be wiped.

The ReadyNAS Pro 6 is recommended. See http://www.readynas.com/plex

If you don't need to transcode I'd still recommend any x86 ReadyNAS e.g. Ultra.

May sound stupid question but how do you specifiy to Plex to not Transcode ? I could not find it?

It won't transcode if the video is already in a format that can be streamed to your client device without needing transcoding.

This may sound a stupid question for those in the know, but if I want to install plex server on my ReadyNAS NV+, which version do I download?

under the ReadyNAS heading on the PLex website are:

Plex for intel or Plex for ARM - which one???

The NV+ v2 is an ARM ReadyNAS

For home user you can also get a Readynas Pro 2 or any of the ULTRAs they are like the pros for home. Not expensive and fast enough. The pros give you business capabilities like teaming, joining to domain. Teaming of course allows for faster bandwidth on that port.
