The setup
My NETGEAR ReadyNAS Ultra 2 (I know, she's old but still lovely!) is connected by a single LAN cable to my local network. That local network also connects three laptops, two cellphones (all four wireless) and two TVs (by a LAN cable). The TVs are provided with digital television by the ISP (if it matters, the Dutch company "KPN"). The phone is also connected to that router by a regular "phone jack" (RJ11).
The ReadyNAS is not often accessed for its NAS part: that is mainly used as photo archive. It does have the HTTP, FTP and SSH servers enabled, but the website isn't "high traffic". The NAS runs on RAIDiator V4.2.27.
The problem
Whenever the ReadyNAS is on and connected to the local network (but not "in use": no one is using the three servers or the NAS part), the TV signal is "disrupted": the screen freezes for periods ranging from 10 seconds to several minutes, and at times it tells me that it lost the signal. The disrupts do not occur when the NAS is not connected to the network. However, that renders the NAS useless of course.
On suggestion of the help desk of my ISP I connected the NAS to another power outlet. This didn't change anything. I also switched the LAN port that is in use on the NAS. That also didn't help.
Maybe some explicit questions might help?
- Could it be that the disrupts are caused by the NAS, or is it just a strange coincidence?
- If the NAS could be the cause, could anyone please help me solve this?
- Would this be a software or hardware problem?
- Would otherwise a new/other device functioning as NAS and webserver solve this problem?
Thanks for considering!

Thanks for the logs.
Your system clearly has been hacked.
Do you have a backup of your data?
I would suggest you backup the data on the NAS, do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restore your data from backup.

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
Have you forwarded ports to your NAS? If you have perhaps someone is trying to brute force hack it.

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
Yes, in normal situations I have the ports for HTTP, FTP and SSH open. However, even when they are closed, I also have these disruptions.

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
Please send me your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig).
Also, there are some security updates in 4.2.28-T6

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
Oh then I will upgrade to that version.
I once broke the frontview interface (see on imgur) by adding some virtual hosts manually in Apache, so I'm repairing it again. The logs of these two virtual hosts are stored somewhere else. Would you like me to send them too to that email address?
Edit: Just send the logs! I looked here for 4.2.28-T6, but only 4.2.27 is listed there. Could you link me to that newer version?

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
I don't have the data backed up yet. Could I attach one of the two hard drives to my Ubuntu laptop and copy data? I know the file system should be some ext version, so that wouldn't be an issue. However, the drives are configured in RAID as is the default, and I don't know if that will present any problem.

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
I wouldn't recommend connecting one/both of the disks to a Ubuntu PC. That would be a last resort for data recovery.

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
I suggest doing a direct connect from the NAS to a PC (which will eliminate any attempts of the hacked NAS to reach the internet), and backing up over the network.
You could also do USB backup on the ultra also, but since the NAS has been hacked it'd be best to block its internet access.

Re: ReadyNAS disrupts TV?
I connected the NAS and a laptop to a separate router, not connected to the regular local network. I attached a hard drive and copied my important files to that drive by sending commands over SSH. Then, I did a factory reset and OS reinstall as described on p.13 of the hardware manual, updated the firmware to 4.2.28-T6 and changed the default passwords. I removed the port forwarding from the regular router, except for HTTP. Then I reconnected the device to the regular local network, added the SSH addon, and started copying my files back and configuring the machine to my settings.
The symptoms are gone! No more disruptions on the TVs. Thank you so much for the help!
As a side effect, the long response time to log in over SSH (10 sec to more than a minute before you get the password prompt since sending the ssh command) are gone now as well.
