ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

Hi Guys,

last night i upgraded my ultra 6 from 4.x.x to 6.5.1

correctly on the amin page I get a "The Fan is not working" notification.

I am sure this has probably been answered 1000 times before, btu I have read a few threads, and none of them seem to help me.

Can you guys please assist?

Hi bakthomas,

Welcome to the community!

Can you clarify if you uploaded the 6.5.1 (RC) or the official 6.5.1 firmware? Also, prepare the device logs.

Kind regards,

I think both the PRO 6 abd Ultra 6 are experiencing the same issue with 6.5.1.

Going back to 6.5.0 was the solution for me.

Hello bakthomas,

You should be able to the see it in the admin page > Overview, it will say RC or Beta next to firmware version.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

Hello bakthomas,

That seems to be the official, then.

I haven't read OS6 NAS units users report this same problem. Like Supertramp11 suggested, revert to 6.5.0. If you are using an OS6 unit, I would suggest you to contact support.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

Today I upgraded my Ultra 6 (6x2TB) to OS 6.5.1.

I'm also having the reported fan error, however all fans seem to be working fine.

The overview only shows one fan: System.

CPU temp is 30 C / 86 F.

The system temp is 51 C / 124 F.

The fan shown in the overview seems to represent the largest fan.

When I look at the physical device the largest fan seems to increase the speed, immedeately slow down, increase again etc.

The speed of the fan shown in the overview is fluctuating between 0 and 1100-1200 rpm.

After downgrading to 6.5.0 there is stil one fan shown in the overview (shouldn't there be two fans shown?).

It has a stable speed 806 rpm.

The temperatures are the same as under 6.5.1.

The largest fan also seems to have a constant speed.

What I do not understand is why there is an rsync running to synchronise the data.

Shouldn't the data area be empty after upgrading to OS 6?

The data area isn't empty; it holds 35.56 MB of data.

The estimated time for the rsync is app. 17:00 (still 14:50 to go.

Is this normal behaviour?

Resync not rsync.  The system is rebuilding the RAID array.  On the data volume usage there will be a small amount of metadata.  This is all normal behavior.

You're right. It is a resync.

Should there also be one fan shown?

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

same issue here since I upgraded my ReadyNAS Ultra 6 to the latest  firmware 6.5.1. Fan is jojoing up and down. Pretty anoying. A reboot and setting the fan speed to ballanced makes it a bit better when sitting close to it but after a shutdown the jojo is back on ballanced. Hope to see an update soon. Don't like the risks of downgrading or the need to backup 20TB of disks.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

ReadyNAS OS 6.5.2 is now available!

You could try

# echo 1000 > /etc/frontview/min_fan_speed_override

# systemctl restart readynasd

That should help.

my readynas doesn't see the update yet but setting the min_fan_speed_override helped. Thanks

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

The 6.5.2 update is available for local updates only at this time.

I beleive there is a change coming in 6.6.0 that may help with this fan threshold issue.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

I have exactly the same problem after upgrading from 6.5.0 to 6.5.2 and am getting an email every hour re the fan speed being under the threshold however with over 2Tb of data to backup up I am loathe to go back to 6.5.0.

Is there likely to be a problem with letting it continue like this until 6.6?

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

It would be best to use the workaround I mentioned above or update to 6.6 RC2.

Letting the fan run into those errors is not recommended.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

I have now connected this unit to an iMac (which has huge performance problems compared to Windows) running Sierra  - do I use terminal to enter these commands?

Yes. launch terminal and enter@ ssh @root@readynas  (using the real hostname or IP address instead of "readynas")

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 - 6.5.1 - Fan System speed below threshold

All good, thanks Stephen (after I realised I had to enable SSH).

The fan speed continued to fluctuate for a few minutes after which time it has settled down at about 990rpm in Quiet mode with CPU @ 30C, System @ 43C and NO fan noise.

Really appreciate your help.
